    Handmaidens

The handmaidens of chronic pain syndromes are fear, anxiety and underlying anger. Pain in itself is harmless.

-- Stuart Taws is a Sports Rehabilitation Therapist originally from England, now living in California. Stuart is the developer of Soft Tissue Release - the Taws Technique.

I came across this odious quote in an article about Fibro and massage. It may have originally appeared in some massage magazine or other.

I would like to see how "harmless" Mr. Taws thinks pain is after I smack him a good one upside the head. He himself does not have to live with chronic pain, so honestly, what does he know and why should I care?! I'm sick to death of so-called "experts" explaining to me how it isn't really all that bad. I've met doctors and nurses with CFS and Fibro, and they are also at their wits' end, trying every possible combination of drugs and treatments one could conceivably cook up, some from beyond the realms of sanity.

I just had to share this BS so others could get out their voodoo dolls and large supplies of pins. It's good to know why the public still thinks we're malingerers, when those who treat us fail to treat us with respect.

Taws shows his lack of knowledge when he says pain is harmless. Ignore the issue that none of us need to be dealing with untreated chronic pain; one immediate problem crops up and that is an increase in in BP. I go from normal BP levels to hypertension when I am in severe pain that isn't treated adequately. There are a number of negative things that happen to our minds and bodies as a result of pain since our bodies treat it as stress and the health issues of stress are well known. It just shows that being able to write on a subject doesn't mean someone is accurate in their analysis.
