Hi all, I think I've been here a few times. I have cronic pain in my lower legs, but only at night. You see, last thanksgiving I had 3 seizers (I have epilepsy) and my heart stoped. When in rehab she pointed out that my right side is my dominant side. My right hip hurts, I can't cross my right leg and my right shoulder hurts when I reach back. But both my lower legs hurt in the middle of the night. It wakes me cringing & screeming. I likely have bad mussles right now. It probably effects me at night because I'm laying in bed not moving my mussles. Do you think there's anything I can do? When writing, I thought, maybe laying with my feet on a pillow could help a little.

Have you talked to your doctor about the pain? Have they recommended anything such as physical therapy, massage, muscle relaxers, etc? If your pain is in your legs only at night when laying down, that should give the doctors some clues. It may be a good idea to have a sleep study to see if they can identify anything specific...I know they can diagnose a lot of stuff like restless leg syndrom (not just apnea). Are you muscles cramping, twitching, or doing anything besides the pain?
Yes, experimenting with different sleeping positions such as pillows could help. I sleep with a wedge pillow under my head/back and a wedge pillow under my knees/legs to help me breathe easier and it alleviates pressure on my back. A good back specialty store can let you try them out before buying, as they are typically non-returnable. You really want to get medical attention to get to the bottom of it though. Any new meds or lifestyle changes? Are you thinking the right side pain is related to the leg pain? Hope you find some relief soon. Best wishes.Kate

Yes there are things you can do and Kate is right about one of them - talk to your doctor. Another thing you brought up helps me and that is to put a pillow under my thighs to bend my legs while I sleep. You should be on a doctor approved exercise plan to improve your muscle tone and strength which will help you in many ways.1979 spinal issues, 1993 lumbar microdisectomy L3-4, 1996 360 3 level lumbar fusion L2-5, 1999 open thoractomy fusion T8-9,

Thankyou, I just started seeing a chiropractor. She said my lower back is out of line & that something is traveling down to my right side. But again that doesn't explane my 2 legs at night. -- She said that when she starts teatment in a couple days, I will go home & it will hurt so much I will want to go back & kill her.Lorraine (lor)

Lor my hubby is an authority (LOL yep he has gone to one all his life) on chiropractioners. He said that if something has been out of place, naturally it will be sore and hurt when it is put "back" in place. Makes sense to me and I have even tried it long time ago. It wasn't way to bad but people are all different. Good luck with it if you go ahead with it.

Lorraine, good luck with the chiropractor. If the problem is caused by muscle being stretched and being sore then she should be able to help you. Some chiros have some wild ideas so don't let her do anything that you aren't comfortable with. After years of not going to a chiro I tried one once again just to try acupuncture to see if it could help with my pain. I explained about all my spinal issues and surgeries and said to never twist me as I wanted was acupuncture. During his checking out my issues he fell back on his usual chiro and twisted my neck which of course set off severe spasms in my back and chest. I didn't go back after that, so be aware that you are the one to decide what you want.1979 spinal issues, 1993 lumbar microdisectomy L3-4, 1996 360 3 level lumbar fusion L2-5, 1999 open thoractomy fusion T8-9,

Lor - If it is of any help, you may have periperal neoropathy, ask your doc to check for this - if you do ( and truely hope not since it is one of my afflictions and I would not wish it on anyone) Ask for a trial of Clonadine as it has helped - its Not narcotic - otherwise I agree with everyone else, a muscle relaxer, something - no one should have to deal with this.

Lor - I wish you the best of luck. - hopefully it has not advanced past your legs. You can try gabapenten (neurontin) but the side ewffects can be terrible, if you do try this, i have heard it works for some people, have your Doc. titrate you up to the most that you can tolerate comfortably. Large doses of morphine are said to help, I personally doubt this having been on a high dose that I have cut in half, all the high dose(i doubt you will find a doc that wpuld go as high) it only made me weak and stupid - differant strokes for differant folk. It helps my back but the neuropathy is H---. you have some good suggesti0ons on this thread, try them.
Blessings
