    Roll Call April 2013

OK... so I am late to post an April roll call, but in my defense I was in Mexico on April 1st!

There will be at least a few of us checking in here, so if anyone has any questions... please ask!

And, if you are reading here... please post so we can build a sense of community! even if it is very small ;).

At this point I try to grow much of our own food since that greatly reduces the chances of cross contamination. I often can't figure out how something could be contaminated. The mixed facility is clear. There seem to be problems which come from shared harvesting, storage, and transportation with grains, pseudo grains, and beans. A study of contamination of those kinds of things was done by Tricia Thompson: Only registered and activated users can see links., Click Here To Register... It seems like using livestock or poultry manure compost and wheat straw in growing things poses a problem. Sometimes it seems like food fraud. Other times I am just plain mystified and I start wondering if I am just crazy. My son's pediatrician's daughter studies agriculture sciences and she gave us some insight and is very supportive of what we do to keep my son healthy. This winter we are having some problems as we ran out of much of our saved homegrown food and our grass fed milk source started feeding wheat. We are having a really hard time finding something else that we can eat. One thing that helps is washing with lots of cycles, and using soap, which is weird to do on food, but seems necessary. I did some home testing for gluten before and after several washing methods, and it seems like I have to use soap.

This can be frustrating and very difficult, and here I am for support and encouragement.

Hope that you had good time in Mexico Cara. It doesn't seem possible that April is almost 1/2 over already.

Spent the first part of April and last 1/2 of March dealing with a rather bad case of bronchitis which necessitated going on prednisone for almost a week. Better now but still coughing.

Hope that everyone had a nice Easter, and has made the move over here.

Things have been very busy in our house. Work is starting to get back to normal, now that the owners are back to work. The owners [husband & wife] go south during the winter which makes me the sole person at the shop. For the 1st quarter of 2013, I've installed half the number of computers in all of 2012. Yup, that meant some long days at work for me.

Exciting GF news... Several articles that I had written for my GIG support group are being used by GIG National. Special thanks to Anne for encouraging me to submit them!

"Only registered and activated users can see links., Click Here To Register..." was published in the GIG Winter 2013 magazine.

"Only registered and activated users can see links., Click Here To Register..." will be published in the next magazine. It's also being used for Branch Leadership Webinars...which I get to present on April 23rd. A GIG National representative created the Powerpoint presentation for a talk at another GIG branch, evidently it was well received.

I just found out a condensed version of my "Only registered and activated users can see links., Click Here To Register..." article will be used in a "guide to gluten-free living" that GIG is creating for Celiac Awareness Month. It will be interesting to see. I don't know too many details on it.

GIG National also asked me to submit an application to be a part of their board of trustees. My application went in the mail on Friday. We'll see what happens...

        Sad news...

As many of you know, May 6th is approaching quickly. This is the deactivation date of GlutenFreeAndBeyond.org forums. It was a good 5 years; we helped a lot of people, but it's time to move forward. Moving back here to BT - where it all started for many us - will be interesting. While it won't be like the old days, we'll still have an opportunity to help others.

Another fourm [forums.glutenfree.com] that I joined in 2004 [was a Moderator/Admin since 2006] has unexpectedly closed. There are some members that wanted to continue on and rebuild, so I am in the process of setting up a small forum for that.

        Guess that's it for now...

No activity on GFAB the past few days. I hope we can get this community going again. Will be fun to see if we can make this place grow a bit.

Waiting for #2 grandchild to be born. Due date is mid May and I will be leaving for WI soon to help out. Big sister will have a little brother and yes, they are GF!

Congrats Al on all the articles and the upcoming webinar.

Al, congratulations on all of the GIG needed! It is great that all of your articles will be read by so many and that they want you you to play a more active role in GIG!!

Anne, what an exciting time! I bet you are very happy to be retired and have the freedom to pick up and go like that! I have to wait until mid July for my newest grandbaby to be born, but my son and his to children are coming for a visit this Friday to see Jana's play! Will is four months now and I haven't seen him in two!
