    Juicing and Juicers...

My daughter and I are thinking of doing a 3 day juice cleanse. Starting small. Yeah... doing one we saw on Dr. Oz last week. I would like to hear from avid juicers and what brand juicers you use.

Also like to hear from those who have tried it and didn't stick with it.

I have an old one I got ten years ago that I resurrected for this little experiment. It never worked that well in the first place. I was looking at a couple of new models... although I hate to buy something new just for a three day experiment. But, having an adequate juicer would sort of have bearing on the experiment.

    Any thoughts?

We use our Vitamix blender almost daily-sometimes several times during the day. I know it is different than juicing but I felt I would not use a juicer frequently after reading about all of the cleaning that is necessary. The Vitamix is easy to clean and I am amazed that I can make pesto in it, clean it with a couple of drops of soap and water on high speed, and then make a smoothie and not have any carry over garlic taste.

I posted in the May Role Call thread too. But I wnated to add that the juicers seem to be a lot of work cleaning and setting up, really big, and not so easy to use. We had one a while ago and just didn't use it regularly because of this. We had no room on the counter so we had put it away and take it out every time we used it. If space is an issue the Bullet is fantastic! It does everything it says it does and comes with a nice book. It has recipes and helps you to start out small like a shake a day. Also a book that gives you some nutritional value of some fruits and veggies. Our whole family is using it regularly even my son who NEVER eats fruits and veggies.

        Cara,

I have a kitchen aid blender and use it. I bought a juicer, Hamilton Beach wide mouth, but found that the juicing was a lot of clean up work, so I prefer using the blender. If you are looking for a blender that is not too expensive and gets great reviews
in Consumers Reports, you might consider the Ninja. I think there are several models of Ninja. The $60 one is rated up there with the Vitamix.

        Good luck with your experiment.

THANK YOU ALL! The clean up was the part I remembered hating... everything getting stuck in the little graters... and I am not one to jump up to clean the second I get done with something.

I did used to have a bullet and loved it. I bet there are posts about it in the archives...lol. But, it broke, and the replacement was a lemon.

Sounds like I'd be better off looking at the Bullet, NutriBullet, Ninja, or Vitamix blenders... and reinvesting there. The difference would be not being quite as nutrient dense per volume as juicing? And possibly some limits on foods that can be used. But... sounds more up my alley. I will look probably look for the strongest motor.

Thanks for saving me a chunk o' change, or at least redirecting my chunk o' change purchase :).

Looks like the Nutri Bullet is 600 watts.
The Magic Bullet is 250 watts.
The simple Ninja blender is 1000 watts.
The vitamix might be out of my price range for now.

It is between the Nutri Bullet and the Simple Ninja Blender. And the winner is NUTRI BULLET! I'd run out right now, but I have to get my Kohl's cash back from my daughter...lol. I gave it to her as a bonus, but I will reclaim it for MOTHER'S DAY....lol!

I'm so glad I didn't purchase a bigger, better juicer which I was considering.

I think you'll be happy with the Nutribullet! Once we saw the reviews and watched a video I was the same way I wanted to run right out and get it. Check around for a Kohls coupon too I had %30 off when I got mine. If you check reviews on this they are fantastic 5 stars. The cleanup is about 60 seconds rinse and done. The book that comes iwth it is great to get you started and there's also some videos online. Good luck!
We just bought sunflower seeds to blend in it too and it worked great. Experimenting is fun!

I have an el cheapo Waring Pro that I got from Macy's last year on sale for $60. Clean up was easy with the brush they provided. Once that wore down I bought a firm toothbrush and it worked just as well. If I cleaned the unit immediately after using it, clean up time was only 5 minutes. The grater seemed to wear down after about 2 months of constant use so I wouldn't buy this product again. I haven't looked at replacing the grater tho.

I tried this for about 3 months and never saw any real improvement over what I'd already accomplished via the paleo diet. My initial reaction was amazing, more energy, but that faded fast. I've been off the paleo diet for 4 months and still feel as good as I did on it. The only downside is that I've gained about 20 lbs.

My problem with juicing is that it lead to damage (temporary, I hope) in my esophagus from the fiber that was left from juicing raw beets, chard, carrots and ginger. These are tough fibrous veggies so their fiber was too much for me. I tried filtering my juice after I realized this but by then it was too late. I still reacted to those veggies with a sore esophagus. I had a sensitive esophagus from constant post nasal drip and GERD, but this made it much worse. This may be a new allergic reaction too ?

I use an el cheapo blender too. $15. It's the Hamilton Beach personal style from Walmart. I've had 2 now because I like the way they blend and I can drink from the container. The first one was destroyed after several years of use probably from putting hot beans in the container. I think the seal came loose.

I like both juicing and blending. Blending is good for smoothies so I do it more often. My fav right now is a cup of cilantro, 1 banana, 1 kiwi, 1 serving rice protein powder and salt.
