    Eliminating Flash

For those of you who don't know me, I have photosensitive seizures. I use the computer with everything that blinks or flickers or flashes turned off.

Several forums ago Mike and Dorrie found a way to set my computer to prevent Flash from downloading. Then a couple of years later Mike and David found a better way to set the computer to stop Flash from even thinking about downloading.

And I did not save those directions, or if I did I can't find them.

    Hi annie :)

Yea I think we did that before the 06 crash because I couldn't find anything on the archives :( I'll need a refresher on your system. What version of windows are you using, which browser and version, and which anti virus are you running?
Question: Why can't I post links or pictures?
Question: Why can't I have a signature, avatar, or profile picture?
Question: What's wrong with my account?

Answer: You are in the "registered users" user group. This group is very limited in what it can do. This will annoy spammers to no end Just keep posting once you have been registered for 30 days and have made 11 posts your account will be "unlocked".

It's really easy to put someone on ignore and it's strongly recommended that you do so with people who's posts you don't like.

    Step 1 - log in
Step 2 - click on the "settings" link
Step 3 - click on the "edit ignore list" link on the left side of the screen
Step 4 - type (or paste if you copied and pasted it) the username of the person you want to ignore
Step 5 - click the "ok" button on the right of the screen

Easy peasy and will lower your blood pressure. One important note though, this won't hide quoted posts. It's an oversight on the developers part and it's not an easy thing to "fix." So if someone quotes someone you have ignored, you'll see the quote.

Alternatively when you click on a person's name and view their profile page, underneath their avatar, there is a option that says, "Ignore this person". Click that link and then click the yes button.

There were a couple of fixes. Dorrie did one involving security codes on the other forum while this one was down. Then you came up with something major that stopped it in its tracks. I bought this computer in I think 2006, the earliest dates I can find on it are July 2006. Oh bios date 4/13/2006

Ok follow the steps below to disable flash in IE 8. This may or may not cause an annoying pop up telling you that flash is disabled, or asking to install flash, or something along those lines.

        Click Tools
        Click Internet Options
        Click Program Tab
        Click Manage add-on options button
        Click Filters
Click Add-ons that run without requiring permission
        Click Select Shockwave Object
        Click Disable button at bottom

IF the above does not work you can try using the regfile I created below. Keep in mind I do not know for sure the regfile will work as I no longer have XP.

        Click start
        Click run
        Type regedit and press enter
        Click File
        Click export
        Name it regbackup
        Select desktop as the location
        Click save

Now you can install the regfile

        Download the file to desktop
Double click the file to unzip it
Double click the unzipped file (disableflash)
        Reboot

If you run into problems or get a registry warning

        Reboot into safe mode
        Double click the regbackup file
        Reboot

        zipped file ... disableflash.zip
