my friend and jobs I have held

I have heard it from my friends mouth tho, as she had asked for a doctor that would not do anything but tell her the truth. She said she has seen many people who their doctors have filled their heads with notions that left them without time to say their goodbyes. Even relatives who she cannot say anything about her pain because they will have to tell about THEIR pain. I sheepishly amitted to her that yes, I knew I had done the same thing.

I also know pain is pain regardless of how you get it. I was brave enough to tell my mother who had it bad as a farmers wife. She was in her 70's and would remind me of how hard she had always worked. I finally snapped one day and said yes, mother I know you had it bad. But my first job was to take felt shoe parts down from a very high place at a shoe factory. My next job was at a Grant's department store where I had to manage big heavy boxes of candy.

Then the job you said I would not be able to do, a meat wrapper at Safeway. The trays would be loaded with as many as six or so heavy roasts where the butchers slid them out and I had to bend over a very high wall trying to reach the heavy trays. All the years combined daily took their tole on my back.

I look back now regretting my little spew as I had a very good mother and daddy. I wish I had gave more of my money to them. Instead I foolishly joined a record club and spent much money on records. My parents never said a word about how they could have used that money for better things. Ah to be young and so foolish again. I would do many things different now if given the chance.

I did quit the easiest job that I loved as a computer typist for six different professionals at our state library tho when mother had a surgery and my stupid boss demanded that I go back to work earlier than I could do, I went in early and quit. I asked her to let me go see a doctor as my back was hurting from all the days and nights of sleeping in chairs at hospital with mother. She refused to budge and I had used up all my sick time, vacation itme everything and she still said no. This was after the new family leave thing had been passed and I had had a run in with her so many times I was tired of fighting with this particular boss. She had a disability and no one could do anything much about her actions it seemed. I needed that visit to doctor for my back tho as I knew the work had piled up and I would be playing catch up.

My back did not improve and I soon joined the ranks like so many have had to do. I was much older by then and I quickly saw I was unable to get another job after mother was better. I had already gotten menieres disease with its bouts of nausea and dizziness and that was far worse than the trigeminal neuralgia where the lightning strikes would put me down when they hit. So i filed for diability and as I was closer to retirement age, i was granted it and I joined my former boss in that respect with a mere pittance of my former salary but I was able to rest when I needed to.

I did save some of the work that I did for one of my bosses tho. It was a front and back page thing with writing on top and down and many tiny lines with dots in certain lines. and writing on the sides. They have programs that do all this for people in todays softwear but I had to figure it out myself and hold my breath as I fed the pages into the good printer we had. It had to pick up the paper as it ran to the edges all the way around the pages. I had to do a perfect one for the front and one for ther back and them combine them on printer front and back. I worked until I got it all correct. Yes I am tickled of what I did accomplish on the computer with limited classes. I made a program on Microsoft Works that checked my figures that I had to do with the numbers on one project. If they did not match, it showed that I had done something wrong. So when I have to let mistakes go now I hate to let them from all the years I had to argue with the progessionals about spelling even. arrgh they just always knew they were right.

The secretary to the main library had me do some of her work even as she only knew one program. She was making 30 thousand plus compared to the small amount I pulled in because they had me labled as a library tech. No way and they made sure I never went when the people that came to ask about what you did for your job came in. They did not want them to know how dirty they were doing me.

I would put my counted cross stitch in a program tho and then look for something else to do on computer after I quit as I loved working on computer trying to find more things I could make it do, LOL. And after awhile let it all go to pot from not having much to do anymore and not being able to sit for long. I wanted it down somewhere tho so I could have it as a record of my years of jobs, :o. What determination to learn can do for someone eager to learn anyway. They did not find someone as good as me to replace me, I am sure of tht and not on libray tech salary.

Donna has asked for my hubby to give her eulogy. So I want to know as much about her myself because she is a brave person and I do feel ashamed at times at how much I take for granted. I know to appreciate things. I had to quit my painting classes by 2002 because I could not keep up with the others. The neuropathy was already with the arthritis working on my hands. So I was glad to bring out my paints to help Donna and she will still finish a project before I do at that. But we have fun trying and that is what is important. She is to have chemo and next thursday is when we both want to go to fire department. My cousins son is now chief of our towns fire department and he is going to come back to his dads and his first fire department to give a talk about the beginnings of fire departments in our town. We don't want to miss that so no painting next week. It is nice to see some of the men that were just kids back when I was also a member doing so well now. It should be very interesting talk.

Sorry for my long post but I did want to have a record somewhere and this is the place I hope to keep coming to for a long time. Sharing with many who I have only seen pictures of but loved reading about their daily lives very much. Mother did not like sharing me when she stayed with me but I needed to share back then and I would not have been much of a companion without being able to share my thoughts with friends on emotional support forum especially back then and still today. I am just going to hit the button and let it go. I did change all the mistakes I found as I scanned it quickly but for the content and all, not going to examine all that close

    joy ,

what an interesting life you have led! thank you for sharing.

sometimes i think the people who are fighting life-threatening disease get tired of thinking about their own pain and suffering and do want to know what's going on with you. it is always hard to open up about yourself, but your true friends will always listen.

i remember this man, they made a movie about him, i think it was called "my left foot" about a man who learned how to do many things in life with his feet cause he had cerebral palsy and could only control his left foot. he painted with his feet. i think it's still possible to paint with physical limitations. you might have to change your style and do abstract or quick impressions of a subject, like strokes representing movement or body parts. painting is not just pretty pictures. maybe using a pencil and doing sketches? you can sit and do those. i think anything you do that's creative enriches your soul.

i used to work at a kentucky fried chicken restaurant when i was 18. when the truck came in with supplies, it had to be unloaded. women were never supposed to lift more than so many pounds, but the manager scheduled when she did. i would pick up 90 pound boxes of raw chicken, put 5 of them on a dolly and roll 450 pounds into the cooler in the store. i was the biggest woman there, so they thought i could do that. i kind of damaged my tendons in my thumbs, the whole thumb joint, fat pad from thumb to my wrist would swell up every so often, even into my 30's. i'd have to let up on my own work, but all is well now and that's the worst injury i ever had that bothered me.

i know you have a lot of memories of the fire department and i know you will enjoy that talk next week .

joy, your name matches what you bring to us when you post. i hope you will be with us for a long time!

      Hi Joy,

What a fascinating life story! I'm glad you were able to get it down and allow the rest of us to read what you've lived. I'm pretty new here, so it gives me a flavor, a mental picture of who you are now, something to recall when your name shows up on the forum.

I hope you do continue with your painting because, like Jeannie says, anything creative that you do can increase your sense of fulfillment. My good friend who has CFS and now breast cancer was tickled pink when she finally took a painting class last fall. She had to go buy a canvas and some acrylics, and then paint in the style of some favorite picture she was supposed to have chosen. But Susan has a mind of her own and wanted to make something from several different paintings she had in her head, so that's what she did and she LOVES her final result. I asked her why she waited till so late in her life to try something she's always wanted to do, and she told me that she hadn't felt like she had "permission" before. Like painting was creative and artsy and took some skill, and she didn't know if she could manage because most things she chooses are so SERIOUS. Well, la de da, she loves it now!

So again, I hope you pick up your brushes and just PLAY. I doesn't matter if you can keep with your classmates, now you're allowed to color outside the lines. Each person works differently so really there's no competition. Just enjoy what you're doing -- enjoy the process of making the painting, even if the final result is not what you had expected. It's kind of the same way with life, right?

Congratulations on lving your own life your own way.

Have you ever had your hands lock up and not move, unless they were moved byt eh other hand, LOL. Well that was what was going on on our last painting night. I knew she wnted to paint an apple, like one I had done and showd her but my hands could not hold onto such a mall brush. She had also liked one that I had done with the knife which had a much larger handle to grip. So I picked to try and do that one., But she was determined to do her own thing, which was okay but I could tell she was dissapointed. Last week she had just ended up by adding blobs of color, which I had hoped she would not do. I told her about when my sister-in-law had done one with me, the snow scene I also showed her. I saw no reason for sil to destroy hers tho you can repain over them.

So she did a yard scene with a tree which was okay as she did not demolish it at end. She can take my books and read and follow directions very well, something I cannot do at all any more myself.

I hope I can hold onto the smaller brushes to let her do her apple some time soon. I have a book very old but from my first attempt at painting called tole red and there are strawberries, flowers and apples with detailed instructions of how to acheive a pretty nice end result. She is sharp and also loves to watch the Bob Ross? instruction shows on tv so she does have some ideals. We have fun and that is what counts.

            Daily Joy

That is the perfect name for you, dear Joy! I'm glad I met my friends granddaughter because that was her name. I thought ah ha, I know Daily Joy and I'm proud she is my friend. You are my true friend to, Joy.

Thank you for sharing your life long memories with us. I do think you may have left out some very interesting parts though.

You know what, I didn't even know you painted until you started helping your friend. Now that I know I would love for you to paint something for me.

You are also good at telling your life stories. My gosh, I can ramble on and on and when I stop nothing makes sense. I watched thru my minds eye as you told of your young life. I enjoyed hearing all the things you have done and I would love it if you told us more of things that were important to you.

I hope those tornado's did not come near you. I thought about you yesterday and last night, knowing where it all started up and prayed you were safe. I prayed for all my friends here at BT and today would love to hear from them. It was bad here, but the tornado's didn't touch down here, maybe 10 or 12 miles away, but close enough to get so much strange wind and rain that danced in circles and each circle was going faster than the first. Strange stuff!

Will write again and hope to hear more from you.

            I love you, Julia
Did you ever know that you're my hero and every thing I would like to be I can fly higher than an eagle
'cause you are the wind beneath my wings

Donna has not got to come over for the last two weeks and it is getting to me. I also heard her say when we were talking about sleeping that she could not nap because people kept calling and ringing doorbell. So that means I limit my calls until her husband is home at night. And last time I called he reported she was already asleep.

So I now have a new plan, I have sent my first letter. I have so many things to catch up with. I keep telling her to call me if she feels like it. I suspect she just does not feel all that well. The insurance, doctors etc keep her busy and her husband tracking down things as well. Not enough to have paid bills, they want copies, lose them etc.

My hands reall do lock up pretty bad and often so I truly am not doing much but smearing paint and usually with the bigger pallet knife because it is easier to hold onto. No more managing those tiny slim paint brushes I am afraid. Not complaing just not geting anywhere when I paint. Donna does her own thing so that is okay and she seems to enjoy it.

Oh yes, Jo I do have a bunch of stories, just like you do too I am sure. Some are those that my mother told me even, LOL so I am especially fnd of recalling those at times. I too was worried about you and a lot of other people during all this springtime tornado season. take care everyone
