    down again with feet

when I fell in the lake, I also injured both my feet. How I'm not sure but on one it isn't too bad and the other one, the one I burned holding it against motor of brothers' already hot 4-wheeler for 20 minutes, wore a hole down to the bone the size of a quarter , had surgery on etc well it is pretty big.

Uugh and back to foot doctor once a week for now. And I am sure you all will appreciate this, I was told to use ordinary honey on them. Not the fancy patches (which I still have plenty off) from before but put honey on both and use gauze and paper tape. Gee how easy. So don't be wondering where I am, I am in bed and losing muscle tone as usual. Gee I can remember thinking this before, how will I ever manage to stay down? Well if I want this skin to regrow and I lost a lot on foot, kinda deep, I guess I know the routine, only the medicine has changed.

Still blue in many places but at least most of thecuts elsewhere has healed. The thing that bothers me is hubby got a tetnas shot, and so did granddaughter. Hubby didn't seem to think I needed one. and yes tha is what the foot doctor asked, have you had a tetnas shot? Well still no for now. drat it all. day late and a dollar short.

But Donna had chemo today, unless she calls sometime later this week and says no. So here is hoping she is doing okay. It is getting harder for her to get over these every three weeks chemo, it is taking it out of her. She had a bad time with swelling up and all this past week. such a dear person as I have ever known. And straightforward and wants doctors and people to be the same with her. So I know when I am well off and will just stay down for as long as need be. Means I can't go see her tho.

oh my dear Joy, what am I going to do with you? You and I need to live closer so we can take care of each other. Now getting in the water does not sound good to me, but if it helps you, go for it!

The honey sounds kinda strange, but hey, if it works I'll go get me a gallon jug. Get us some white lightening while I'm at it! lol Just stick your nose in every now and again and let us know how you are.

My prayers and thoughts are with you always. Also for your friend Donna. It's sure a shame that such good people suffer so much. I pray she will have an easier time after this round of Chemo.

now you take care, get your cane and for goodness sakes don't be picky about using your walker. Mine has saved me many a fall and it goes every where I go!
I love you Daily Joy and want you better!, Jo

        hey joy !

i'm sorry about your laid-up status. i actually did read something quite a while ago about using sugar for burns. i assume honey would do the same thing.

you need a tetanus booster shot only every 10 years.

i hope you get to feeling better fast and that your friend donna also does well with her chemotherapy.

        (((hugs to joy ),

          ((((((joy))))))

If you have plenty of those fancy honey patches left, please use them up, before you apply commercial grade honey to your wound.

My son had a severe decubitus ucler (bedsore) after hospitalization in 2009. He ended up with a 5" tunnel in his left buttock. It took 9 months to cure it, and we tried an assortment of wound care including silver, algae, honey and collagen. When we used the honey, I called him "Honey Buns!"

Jon was fortunate to have home health care nurses, who specialized in wound care.

Is it possible for you to see a wound care nurse or a wound care specialist?

Wounds change as they heal, and often require a change in treatment, if one isn't succeeding. For example, Jon's wound care nurses generally gave a week to 10 days for any particular treatment, or would reassess the treatment sooner, if the wound worsened. We had so many different kinds of wound care products after 9 months of trying this and then trying that and then this ~ I could have opened a wound care clinic! I learned that wound care is really an art, as well as a science.

If you can find a wound care specialist or wound care nurse to guide you through treatment of your wounds, you will likely heal more quickly than if you just stick with honey, especially non-medicinal honey.

From Jon's primary wound care nurse, I learned that our skin, the largest organ we have, is the last to receive the nutrients of our bodies. The other organs gobble them up, especially if infection might be present.

Please be sure, Joy, that you are feeding your body well, with healthy foods, plenty of water (fluid is important in treating a wound, especially a burn wound), and taking vitamins/minerals.

You might also want to keep your feet elevated as much as possible to avoid fluid retention in them.

Sending healing energy and prayers your way ~

          Love & Light,

I have had some fairly severe burns and road rash before, had knuckles that were down to bone... I feel for you!
For me, the worst part was changing the bandages, so someone to help do things quick makes the process waaaaay less painful. The key is to NEVER let the wound/bandage contact get dry!!! Honey works great, but my experience is that it dosnt matter if it is honey, fancy bandages, neosporin, vaseline, whatever, just so the bandage does not stick to the wound!!! If the bandage sticks to the wound, it will attach to fresh nerves and cause the worst sort of pain there is when removing the bandage!
If the bandage is sticking to the wound, one remedy (that many burn centers use) is to cover the gel/honey with plastic wrap, then your gauze. Place the plastic in a way that it hold some fluid, but still allows some drainage as to not build up a extreme amount of fluid/pressure. Sort of works similar to the idea of the fancy patches.
Another method, might be to use your hydrogel dressing (working similar to the honey), then the plastic wrap over that, then some gauze (or something light to cover the wrap)

While the foot doctor might be good, they do not treat wounds/burns every day! A wound specialist or burn specialist is a really good idea if it is really bad, as any other sort of doctor just does not have the experience to treat and monitor really bad burns!!!

Joy dear, I hope you are doing what the Dr. says, but I won't ask you that question. I know you will.

At least you were doing something you liked to do when you fell, there is that!
My thoughts and prayers are with you, as always.

Will check back in later to see if you have up-dated us. Be careful and get that walker. that's not a sign of weakness, but it could very well keep you from falling. Mine has been a blessing, save me from a bunch of falls.

Ken says I drive that thing like a truck! How nice of him. lol I almost run him over the other day. I told him if he saw me coming to get outta my way!!

              all my love, Jo

Well Joy the first time I ever saw honey used was on a very high priced horse who wound up with a nasty puncture wound. I was amazed. Here is a little bit I found online.

The antimicrobial properties of honey prevent microbial growth in the moist healing environment created. Unlike other topical antiseptics, honey causes no tissue damage: in animal studies it has been demonstrated histologically that it actually promotes the healing process. It has a direct nutrient effect as well as drawing lymph out to the cells by osmosis.

The stimulation of healing may also be due to the acidity of honey. The osmosis creates a solution of honey in contact with the wound surface which prevents the dressing sticking, so there is no pain or tissue damage when dressings are changed. There is much anecdotal evidence to support its use, and randomised controlled clinical trials that have shown that honey is more effective than silver sulfadiazine and polyurethane film dressings (OpSite®) for the treatment of burns.

I sure do hope you are getting to feeling better soon.

I see we have a lot of knowledgable people here. I thank you each for you comments and wisdom.

I am with a very good wound care doctor. Unfortunately I have been with him for a looong time cause this ain't my firt rodeo, LOL.

Rodeo going has stopped for me in fact. I HAVE been doing better at staying DOWN more than I ever have before. Of course this time I don't have as many depending on me as some of the times in past. Dear mother use to need me when my first bad thing called for a foot doctor. In fact, it was at
Mayo Clinic when I wore that hole down and got my first hard boot. Which I no longer have but as I am down except for short um hop skip for necessities, no boot needed.

Anyway I got the permission to wait for a month bbefore return visit if I keep a good eye on it and will go back if needed before then.. I have a neighbor that went in for removal of a bone spur and had her leg taken off because it got infected and her doctor said since she was coming in next day, to just wait. when doctor did see it, she was taken to hospital and lost her leg!!!

with my already near MARSA tendies for antibiotics to not work well, well so I am minding and staying down till I am near out of my head from boredom. But I also know it is what is needed. It is a BIG piece of foot that needs skin to regrow and even on the toe of other foot there i enough room for germs to make way inside my body!!!! EEK scares me to death just thinking about it.

In fact, I WAS thinking of poor girl and the loss of body parts that fell in the river with homemade zip line when I did a nono, I poured peroxide on that wound. That peroxide kills good tissue is know by me but all I could think of was that girl and as we were at lake with limited supplies, I just used it. aaauk. doctor warned me good today about all the germs and things out there to keep that fear in me. Like knowing two people at least that have lost limbs weren't enough to do that already.

again I thank each one for their comments. Don't we have so many good people on BrainTalk? Gotta love em all cause we have some of the nicest people here I think. Back to bed. and television, awful stuff to watch at times and I can
feel my muscles leaving as each day pases, even wih me trying to do bed exercises. Hurts so many places being down while losing muscle tone but anyway, I hope to make progress in a month or so. It is a big place like I said and I am not even sure what it was that did the injury because of feet being dead. Swim shoes for sure when I ever get back to lake and if I forgot them, water and everyone can wait until the trip back to camper is made to get my shoes!!!

Joy,sooooo good to hear from you! sounds like you are doing the best you can, must be very hard to stay down so much. I think about you when watching the hummingbirds I now have here.

that's interesting about the peroxide-thanks for the info cause I always grab that first for anything.

you need shoes that cannot come off! my son has some but can't recall the brand. they are rubber of some kind.

since I've gotten my blood sugar down the bottoms of my feet are no longer flaming red. progress! I sure don't want to end up with PN.

hopefully you will get to return to the lake before summer is over even if you have to stay on shore in a lounger. you've already learned your lesson the hard way but hopefully your feet will heal & the infection will go bye-bye for good.

Joy dear, I guess we do sound like a bunch of know it all old women, but hey, who else we got to tell what to do? Sure ain't da kids, THEY know it all now, or so they think. lol

I do know it is hard to lay in bed and count those muscles disappear one at a time!! I've kind of been there way too much lately too. Neither one of us is the type to lay around eating bon bon's and watching soap opra's for hours on end!

I've watched so much History channel I'm getting sick of it. I know how to catch an aligatar, shoot him and render it helpless! I scraped that show, murdering helpless animals is not my style. Then there is "Larry the Cable Guy!" , scraped him off my list too.

Watch so many silent movies I get lonesome to just hear some noise. Back to History, the American Pickers. Now I'm gonna call those boys and get them to stop at MY house when they come back to Carolina. I saw a sign one night that had the name of a couple of towns not more than 5 miles from my house! Sorry I missed them. I would set them loose in that old garage full of junk/treasures that Ken keeps saying he has GOT to tear it down when he has time! Time? I thought that was ALL he had since he retired. Working on computers is not work!

Oh btw, Ken did take me by car lots a couple of times on the way home from the Drs. I didn't feel like it but would Never tell him! I don't know if we are making progress there or not! I won't hold my breath. He already has a new garage built. His Electronic shop is in the back room of the garage. The garage is just setting there, waiting for a new car! Been waiting about 10 yrs. or so.

Well Daily Joy, I hope all of your problems are getting better, but just don't over do. I think of you every day and pray that you will heal soon. You are a wise lady and know how to care for yourself , just wanted to say I miss you and hope all will be well soon.

                        all my love, Jo ((((Joy))))

                          not doing so good

I have not only the big patch that needs skin but now there is a hole that has gone all the way through the fatty tissue in my foot and is pretty deep. I have been staying down except to go to bathroom and a few time go to kitchen to nab something to eat when hubby is out doing stuff.

It is pretty bad when I call a friend with terminal cancer and whine to her and that is exactly what I did yesterday. Not to proud of that but I am still so scared something can go wrong and I have been told more than once I could lose a foot sohad that on my mind.

I am in a different attitude today. I am to rent one of those "knee wheelers" and of course we had vehicle trouble when we left foot doctors office yesterday. It was so hot our vehicle would not start, yep that can and does happen with batteries in extreme heat or cold.
So by the time hubby got sons truck to get us home he did not get to go by the medicl place to get the knee wheeler for me. And he lost the prescription as well. and when he left to do other things this morning, well lets just say, all the nurses and doctors close up on Friday afternoon so it will be Monday before I get one. $hit is my favorite word to say at these times double that in fact.

So the cord to the laptop is lost from our trip we took to pick up the fire department check and I have been sneaking in here when I write my gripes. So just know that if hubby doesn't find that cord I won't be online and not to worry.

I will still be down for the hole to close still by Thanksgiving by my calculations and that was before the hole. It is anybody's guess now and I was being optistimic at my calculations at that. But I am still thankful as I know I am better off than my friend. She wasn't up to visiting last night to pint either and I can understand why, she has been taking more of he pain pills. They make her sleep and I can understand her not wanting to sleep away what time she has left. Please pray for her, her husband, mother and sister. It has to be awful on them as well. And for me to ot be such a whiney friend. She needs upbeat ones not needy ones.

Hate your having such a bad time. Have they talked about doing anything to heal it up rather than just stay off it. If it does not start improving in a month push them to do some other treatments, the last thing you want is for it to become chronic. Hope you find your power cord soon!

Joy,doesn't sound good about that hole. and guessing it's way too hot there? not sure what a knee roller is but hopefully it will help you get around some. will certainly say a prayer for Donna & her family. just found out about 2 women in neighborhood that have cancer. I call this area cancer ridge since just about EVERY house has been hit with it!

I also think you should ask for more aggressive treatment.it's your foot afterall. no idea what can be done but keep thinking of a friend that lost her big toe a couple years ago when first doc tried the wait & see approach. (not saying this is what your doc is doing).

((((hugs)))) and better days ahead Joy!
