I thought I'd update you all on what's been going on for me! I was directed here by a post on Lisa's Facebook and it brought back memories. I'm sure some of you at least remember me - I remember you!
Anyway, I'm 20 now and in my third year of my law/arts degree. Here, law is an undergraduate degree that one usually completes with another (in my case, a BA). It's challenging and a lot of work but I am enjoying it.
Other big news I mentioned in another thread is that I am no longer living at home! I moved out about a month ago at the start of the university year into a catered 'hall' (dorm). It was all really sudden, but my parents are moving to Australia and I needed a place to go. I considered going with them but it is near impossible to transfer credits for a law degree, especially when the system is different at most unis, and also it was too late to do that this year anyway. It is going to be a really big change for us all and I will miss them but will look forward to getting to go and visit a few times a year in the holiday breaks. My twin brother is staying here so at least I will have someone. I'm actually going to employ him to help me with some every day household stuff like vacuuming and grocery shopping and getting to and from appointments, with some funding I have been granted so that will be good.
I am enjoying living independently as it allows me to do and socialise a lot more without having to rely on my parents to get me to and from places. I managed to get a power wheelchair second hand before I moved it so I use that to get around the place and it only takes me about 10 minutes to get to and from the campus. The only real gripe I have is that my roommates seem to lack social skills and very much keep to themselves so where I'm living is not very social. I guess it is good, though, because it encourages me to get out and seek social interaction in other ways!
I am also involved in a lot of extra curricular stuff/projects, like being on various committees, community boards etc. Since my city of Christchurch suffered its two major earthquakes in Sept 2010 and February 2011, it has given rise to a lot of opportunities for me to develop my advocacy and community engagement skills. One of project I am working on with a gril from the UK, is to develop an international network of young disabled people to network, information and skill share so that they can have access to international development opportunities and also empower and inspire one another to make change in their communities. This is being funded through the international youth programme I went to India with at the end of 2010. Anyway, I have to go to a law lecture really soon but nice to see familiar names around! The new chapter in my life is scary and fulfilling and busy, all rolled into one and I am enjoying it!
