    Kathleens update

We saw Kathleens GI Dr. yesterday. I think I mentioned she's had progressivly worse belly pain and extremely exhausted. Blood work showed her thyroid was off a bit so we changed that and it's made no difference. I didn't think it would since she's had it off more than that with no symptoms at all. Anyway her GI Dr, ordered more blood work and he will coordinate with the surgeon next week and do a colonoscopy after she's done placing the cecostomy tube. He's checking to see if the crohn's or celiac is active, they have both been under control with diet and meds. Since she will not be going to school till after the Holidays she has a tutor coming to the house 3 times a week and she really enjoys that. It's funny because whenever we go to the Dr.s she has a huge smile for everyone, it's hard to believe she feels so awful inside.

Both levothyroxine and synthroid have stomach pain/cramps/nausea as side effects. The fillers used for these drugs can also cause stomach problems (maybe they are the actual culprit).

Here's some information, which you probably already know about Levothyroxine/Synthroid:

I've researched this drug quite a bit, because I've had to decide twice whether to give it to Jon. He reacted very poorly to the lowest possible dose of Synthroid, and because it affects red blood cells (anemia, which Jon has) and can contribute to bone loss (Jon has osteoporosis), I stopped giving it to him. It's scary to not treat his hypothyroidism, but it's scarier to see him suffering the side effects. Which devil do we fight?

When Jon was able to eat real food orally, I managed to control his hypothyroidism with diet. There are lists of foods to avoid and foods to eat specifically to manage hypothyroid. It would be ideal if Kathleen could go off of Levothyroxine and manage her thyroid levels with diet. It might be something worth exploring.

When Jon was diagnosed with hypothyroid, a Healing Touch therapist, who also has hypothyroid recommended that I look up Mary Shomon on the internet. Mary Shomon is like a thyroid guru. Here's her primary website:

The thyroid is such a critical gland to our health and functioning. I wouldn't be surprised if Kathleen's thyroid was at the core of her intestinal issues, as well as her fatigue.

Kathleen is such a courageous, beautiful and amazing young woman. To smile and be cheerful with all that she is enduring is heroic.

I'm glad that Kathleen is enjoying her tutor, and I'm sure you are grateful for her tutor.

    Know that my prayers continue.

Please let us know before Kathleen's colonoscopy. I like to focus my prayers for those specific needs.

Rose, as always thank you for all your information. I will check out the web sites you posted and look into ehr thyroid issues a bit more. I did hear back from ehr Dr. and her blood work showed that one of her celiac antibodies is elevated. He has coordinated with the surgeon to do a colonoscopy and biopsies when she's in for her Cecostomy surgery. It may be that her celiac or crohns is causing inflamation and this has increased ehr belly pain and exhaustion.

How is Kathleen feeling? Do you have a surgery date yet?
