Lots of love to everybody - a bit wild around lately with my Mum's geriatric assessment yesterday (stayed overnight because it started early morning). Assessment followed by bringing Mum for a haircut while I did shopping, made brownies, apple crisp and scalloped potatoes with ham. Then back to Ottawa and I found out that my niece's baby daughter (10 mos) has a septic arthritis from unknown virus and is in isolation at the hospital. Luckily, they caught it early enough and she had surgery to drain the infection - she's getting a picc line and staying in hospital for a lot longer - she nearly lost her hip and mobility! My neice's 4 year old is being looked after by my husband's brother and his wife, but his wife just had a hip replacement not even two weeks ago and the incision is infected. So today, I made lasagna, swiss steak with mashed potatoes, apple pie and banana cake to bring over for all of them. What's with the karma lately? BUT so far and I am Catholic, so I am doing the sign of the cross as I type this, everyone in our family is FINE. We are healthy and haven't a crisis in a year (unheard of). Anyhoo, that's what's new around here - when worried, must cook!!!! xoxo

    ((((Donna))))

Sorry to hear about your niece's daughter....poor baby....so young to have such a serious infection! Prayers that she pulls through! Hope your Mum is doing well, sounds like you had some nice together time.

I loved your blog post about eye contact. I have noticed this about doctors also, being uncomfortable and then not looking us in the eye. It bothers me when that happens!

How on Earth does a 10 month old infant acquire a virus causing septic arthritis? I've never even heard of septic arthritis. How did they know that your niece had this? Fever?

Thank God it was caught early. I will pray for her rapid and complete healing, and prayers for her parents, who I know must be stressed to the maximum and worried to bits.

Healing prayers going up for your sister-in-law also.

I'm sure that your delicious food is greatly appreciated by everyone. And all of them comfort foods. So loving and caring, Donna. It's one of the nicest things to do for anyone, who is in crisis, bring home cooked comfort food. Bless you.

I hope that all went well with your Mum's assessment, and that she will continue to receive the assistance she needs.

Prayers for you all that you remain crisis-free for a LONG LONG LONG time.

I'll respond to your blog post later, after I've had an opportunity to read it.

Hi Guys, Thank you for the kind words and prayers! My nieces' baby's legs stopped working, that was the clue. This is the third mysterious virus (serious) that I have heard of recently - a virus in a toddler that cannot be isolated. Catastrophic outcome (luckily, thank GOd, I think it will be fine for our little Harriet)... but is this some sinister new trend? Have to wonder! xoxD

Donna I'm so sorry to hear all that's going on in your family. Many prayers that all will turn out well. Sounds very scary about the viruses and how seriouse they can get so quickly. I'm so glad the dr's were able to make a quick diagnosis.
I read your blog and as always your words are so true and so enlightening. I think this will stick with me and make me much more aware of my own actions. I do know that when Kathleen isn't well I stay very close, and our faces practically touch as I speak to her using her name a lot so she looks at me too.It seems to calm her, Otherwise she gets very upset and doesn't understand what I or anyone else is saying. Thank you for sharing your experiences...

Oh what a beautiful image I have in my mind of you comforting Kathleen, Mary Grace!!! I do the same thing, even when Nick is sedated - I put my face close to his and I put my hands on his cheeks and whisper loving things to him. I don't know. I think it helps - it helps me to believe I am soothing him anyway, even when he's sedated (I'm thinking in the recovery room) or when he's waking up in pain from a surgery. xo Donna
