    Sleep Study

    Hi Folks,

Have any of you ever had a sleep study done? I'm having one done this Friday. For a few months I've been exhausted no matter how much sleep I get and my DH tells me that I snore terrible. Of course the sleepiness
will lead to sz.which isn't good. I'm wondering if I have sleep apnea. Sleep apnea runs in my family my brother has it and I've also noticed there have been times when I have a rapid heartbeat when I'm not doing a single thing
except sitting in a chair relaxing. This could also be a side effect from the vimpat I'm taking also. If I'm not around for a couple of days I will be in the hospital and possibly having surgery done. All of you take care and May God
    Bless You!

Sleep study is pretty low key at least when my husband has done them. They wire you up (brain, heart, legs, arms, etc.) and videotape you sleeping. It is usually just an overnight study. The results crack me up because they tell him he didn't get into a deep sleep but honestly, who could being wired up and not in your own bed.

      Good luck.

        Howdy Sue!

        Yes, I have.

I went to a sleep study at a sleep center here in Rochester (now located at Clinton Crossings) and was diagnosed with sleep apnea.

My wind pipe collapses and blocks air intake. This caused one to stop breathing for a time and, in some cases either stops or causes an irregular heartbeat. I never had a complete night's sleep before I started treatment for my apnea.

Sleep deprivation is one of the leading causes of seizures.

Now I have a CPAP (Constant Positive Air Pressure) Machine which prevents the collapse and I get a full night's sleep.

          Hi Folks,

Thanks for all of your prayers, info. and websites I greatly appreciate it. I know I have a lot of the symptoms of sleep apnea so it should be interesting to find out if I have it. I'm used to being wired up
for all the tests for epilepsy so the sleep study (if they do one) sounds like it will be simple. l just hope this is the cause of all my sz. I've been having and why I fall asleep so much in the late afternoon and early
evening. Here's wishing You Well and May God Bless You!

            Howdy Sue!

The sleep study is a snap!

All they need eeg electrodes for is to determine which stage of sleep you are in.

Other than that, they are mostly focusing on your respiration and your heartbeat.

                Hi Folks,

I saw the sleep specialist today (Friday) and this coming Wednesday they will be doing the sleep study on me starting at 7 pm until the next day around 5 pm or later. I want to thank everyone for all the help
and support you have given me. If I do have sleep apnea this will answer my question to why I've had more sz. this past yr. I'm only going one week each month sz. free. when it used to be 3 wks. sz. free and only 1 wk.
of sz. Here's wishing all of you only the best and May God Bless You!

Sleep apnea etsts and other tests

My wife has had several studies:

My wife has had a 48 hour video-EEG (electrodes tapes to her scalp with a 30' foot tether), in the hospital to determine what may be spawning her seizures. In this study, my wide was not sleep deprived, not were medications reduced. The results = nothing of any significance. [I tried to take the tether home, but the request spawned a melee.]
                  = = = = = =

My wife has had a 24 hour video-EEG, in the hospital to determine what may be spawning her seizures. In this study, my wide was not sleep deprived, not were medications reduced. This occurred while my wife was hospitalized for 72 hours after the discovery that her blood pressure medication had induced bradycardia. The results = nothing of any significance.
                  = = = = = =

Another time, my wife wore with electrodes taped to her scalp a recorder while at home. This was for about 48 hours that monitored and recorded her brain activity. I don’t recall the device name. The results = nothing of any significance.
                  = = = = = =

My wife has had an 8 hours sleep apnea video-EEG, in the hospital to determine if in fact she was beset with apnea. The doctor believed she has apnea and a positive air pressure machine was ordered, delivered and she attempted to employ it over a multiple week period. Unfortunately, she felt very uncomfortable and returned the device.

The alternative is a mouthpiece that pulls the lower jaw forward that maintains an open airway during sleep. My wife elected to forgo this device. It is an oral appliance and typically requires a dentist (and prescription) to fit one properly else a person’s jaw and teeth may become misaligned.
                  = = = = = =

Of note is that my wife complained of other symptoms to her cardiologist and she was fitted with a device to track her heart rate (pulse). It was the size of small paper back novel and the device “called home” when it detected an anomaly in her heart pace or rhythm. As a result of the test, it was determined that her heart was stopping for 3 to 5 seconds. As a result my wife was fitted with a pacemaker, though she did not require the defibrillator. Though it was to be a three week monitoring test, after one week the cardiologist suspended the test and recommended the pacemaker.

While my wife was being monitored, we might receive a call at perhaps 2 AM from the central monitoring center with a question: “Is your wife OK, do you need an ambulance?” This occurred several times and once we were in the car, my wife was talking to me and my cell phone rang. It was the center with the same question.

If we were at home, we would place the device near the phone at it would upload any information to the central site.

                  Ah technology!

My wife's device, though the models no doubt have evolved, was provided by:

                    Hi Ted,

Thanks for all of the wonderful info you sent me, I greatly appreciate it. I will be starting the study tomorrow night (Wed.) at the Drs. office where he has a bed all set and the tech will be there overnight. I will be able to
leave the Drs. office by 6 am Thursday if all goes well. I just hope I will be able to sleep since I'm going to be in a different location. Sleep apnea runs in my family, my brother has it and he uses a mask with oxygen at night to
help me and I hope they will be able to find out if this is sleep apnea or maybe it's just stress that's causing me to feel tired, and I wake up 3-4 times a night not to mention I snore very loud. I know my dear husband wants that
to stop so he can sleep better. Here's wishing you well and May God Bless You!

                      Hi Folks,

I just got home a little while ago from my sleep study last night and the tech told me he didn't find any sleep apnea but he was going to have a sleep specialist look over my e.e.g. and the video to be sure. They think that I'm not
getting enough moisture in my throat right now and that's what's making me snore really loud to the point where I wake up my husband and myself. The tech also thinks that stress is causing lack of sleep with work and my family issues.
My Drs. have told me to cut it off with my family since they cause a lot of stress and of course this leads to sz. I will know the final outcome of the test in a couple of weeks. Thanks for all of your support and help. May God Bless All of You!
