    Mri findings--what does it mean?

here is what some of the MRI report says. Findings; A 4x 3x 5 cm area encephalomalacia in the right temporal lobe is surrounded by elevated T2 signal indicitive of gliosis...................later at end of report it reads---A large, postoperative encephalomalacic area in thr right trmporal lobe with surrounding gliosis. Anybody understand that or could give me some help on what that means?

    Hi bevali,

I'm not a Dr. but if I'm not mistaken encepholomalacia is just another way of saying that you have a scar or scar tissue on the right temporal lobe of the brain and it has happened because of a head injury , MS, or possibly a stroke. Then the
extra cells in your brain turn into gliosis and this in turn is what is triggering your sz. The T2 is the level of the gliosis which is high and the A 4x 3x 5cm is the location on your brain where they found the possible scar or scar tissue.
Here's wishing you well and May God Bless You!

oh thanks Sue. Not sure I understand extra cells and gliosos. Is 4x3x5 a small area? God Bless You as well!

A man's pocket watch is between 4 cm and 5 cm in diameter.
You are talking about something about the size of a Rubic's Cube.
        (Most Rubic's Cubes are 3x3x3; 4x4x4 or 5x5x5 cm.)

That's a pretty big chunk when we are talking about the human brain...
You sure that they were talking about cm and not mm?

          Hi bevali,

I have to agree with Dave that is a very large area of the brain you might want to double check on the size. Wishing You Well and May God Bless You!

No, I looked over those sentences again and it's 4x3x5 cm. area After the info I copied from report earlier it says:
There is no associated aneurysm at circle of Willis, noting that this would be best evaluated by a MRA, which was was not done. There was hn unusual enhancement around edges of mass. No infection, neoplasm wiyh what appears a large encephalomalacic area of surgery in the right temp lobe which could relate to seizure occurrance......and then goes on
does say some minimal susceptibility artifact in area of previous surgery

The "standard size" of a human brain is 1200 cc to 1450 cc (depending on which study you quote.)
              4 cm x 3 cm x 5 cm = 60 cc

              60 cc / 1200 cc = 5% of your entire brain.
60 cc / 1450 cc 4.14% of your entire brain.

so that's not a huge chunk of the right temporal lobe is it......covered with encephalomalacia and gliosis is it???? (since that right temp lobectomy my spacial is not so good ;)) The report does say LARGE alot, but 5% doesn't seem large considering it's just the temporal lobe----right?? :O

                  Hi bevali,

When I had right temporal lobe surgery done the surgeon removed 75% of my right temporal lobe and all of my right hippocampus and I'm doing fine. I will admit my short term memory isn't as good as it used to be
but that's do to removal of the hippocampus. They removed it because it shrunk and became hard after yrs. of sz. Now I do a lot of brain teasers, writing, and puzzles to help better my memory. Here's wishing you well
                  and May God Bless You!

                    The thing is...

You are not talking about the area with epileptic acitivity,
you are talking about the area with encephalomalacia.

                      Howdy Dave,

If you were speaking to me (Porkette) this is the area of my brain where the epileptic activity was happening. Here's wishing you well and May God Bless You!

                        Howdy Sue!

                        Nope...
This was referring to bevali's initial post:
Findings; A 4x 3x 5 cm area encephalomalacia in the right temporal lobe is surrounded by elevated T2 signal indicitive of gliosis
"Is surrounded by..." does not give any indication of how much of the brain is involved with elevated T2 signals.
It just says that the 4x3x5 area is in the middle of it.
