Are there any tests that can be done to find out physical reasons, neurological or hormonal or in some different area, that can find out the reason for a persistant lack of sleep? I had an MRI that came back normal, but now the doctor said that he doesn't know what else to check.

Welcome to Braintalk!
Sleeping properly is so important to systemic health and well being. I'm sorry that you're struggling with insomnia.

If you haven't had your thyroid tested, I recommend you do that to rule out hyperthyroidism or hypothyroidism, both of which can contribute to insomnia.
You might ask your doctor for a referral to a sleep specialist, who might suggest a sleep study.
Are you on any medications, which might cause insomnia? Do you drink caffeinated beverages? Do you get plenty of exercise and fresh air? Are you experiencing a lot of stress in your life?
Have you tried taking melatonin? You might ask your doctor's opinion about it. Here's a link to the National Sleep Foundation about Melatonin:

The good news is that your MRI results are normal. That is worthy of celebration.
I hope you find the cause of your insomnia and are able to remedy it soon and get some good solid sleep.
Love & Light,
Rose
