Risk of cataract and glaucoma in MS

This abstract of a study entitled "Risk of cataracts and glaucoma in patients with multipls sclerosis" is from Multiple Sclerosis Journal, October 24, 2011. It looks as if in general there is no increased risk of cataract or glaucoma in people with MS, but there is a markedly increased risk for both cataract and glaucoma in persons with MS under age 50--especially men.

I think if the risk is greater, it would not be in the UK. It would be in the USA. We receive steroids more often than the UK gives their MS patients. Many only see a MS nurse. Maybe we get steroids too often nowadays.

Perhaps younger men in the UK get more steroids. Do you think that is a possibility?

I didn't get them unless it was my mobility or severe eye issues that were affected. I did get them for 30 years. I am thankful to only have one eye with a cataract.

Many people have them. If it is not in your field of vision you would never know if you had one and they are not dangerous unless the eye doctor says so. Some can lead to blindness he said.

Mine started, and was growing across the middle of my eye. Many eye doctors told me it is a lousy place to have one start after all these years.

When it interfered with my vision, I got the courage to get it done. Plus I know a women of 95 who had it done in both her eyes. She sees great now.

        Cataracts

I had cataract surgery in March of this year. I was told that my right eye was the worst and I was legally blind in that eye. Now I see 20/20 after wearing glasses since I was 20. Everyone over 50 will still need glasses for reading so I have one for reading and another pair for the computer. But I was able to buy them at the drugstore for $10.00 each.

I still have a slight problem with the left eye in that I see a flashing light in the lower left corner. I am hoping it will eventually go away. My pharmacist who recently had the surgery said it was a small place that got wrinkled while placement. She is waiting for it to go away and if not they can do a laser procedure to clear it up. As surgeries go it was a minor procedure. My surgeon actually invented the instrument that is used in his surgery and maybe others as well.

My father had glaucoma when he was only 49 and the surgery left him legally blind and unable to continue to work in the furniture manufacturing plant. He ran the machinery that cut the parts.
