Pain in left chest and back

I have had a severe pain/burning sensation on my left side, mid chest, (right below my breast) that goes all the way to my back. It is more of a burning sensation in the back, and a pulsing/burning in the front. I have had this pain for 9 days now, day and night. It is so bad sometimes that it keeps me awake at night.

I broke my leg on Jan 10, and am still in a boot. Because of that, my family Dr suspected possible clot in my lung, so I had a chest CT scan last Wednesday, and it was negative for clot, and completely normal. He then said it could be MS related, so I called my neuro, and he ordered MRIs of brain, c spine and t spine. I will not see my neuro until April 18th, but will get the MRIs next week.

Does this type of pain sound like MS to anyone.

I was dx'd about 13 years ago, an have been doing fairly well for the last few years.

Thanks in advance for any replies.

It sounds a bit like the "MS hug" to me. It's a very severe pain.

I've tried to find some posts about it here. I know it's been discussed often on this board. Maybe someone else will have more luck in finding the discussions. Here is one thread that I found in the archive. It's from May 2011:

Sorry I can't be more helpful but yes, it does sound as if the pain could be MS-related. It's also possible that the added weight of the boot you've been wearing has stressed your body in some way that is causing the pain. I hope someone will find a way to stop your pain long before April 18!

Welcome to BT, Bernermom. Sorry to hear about the pain. It sounded like heart to me. Women's symptoms are different than the classic that you hear of in men. Then I read that you'd seen your MD so I don't know.

Maybe a parathesia as Agate is mentioning. Is it on the skin going around to the back or going through the core of you?

Again, sorry you are in pain.

Thanks for the responses. I will check out that link.

It is hard to say if it is going through the core of me. It is intense in the front some of the time, like a pulsing burn pain, and in the back it is more constant. It actually started out in the front more, then moved to the back. It is deeper than a surface pain, and does not feel muscular, because when I move it does not help or worsen it.

I am not one to get too depressed, but I must admit that this has taken me to my limits. I have been in pain from the broken leg since Jan 10th, and it is not healing too well, and then this pain on top of it. I think I need anger management classes about now!

My dogs are such a comfort. They know I am not feeling good, and are so concerned. I am so lucky to have them.

My first thought was heart too, so I'm glad you've checked in with a doc. Some kind of pulled/stressed muscle or the MS hug also came to mind.
I hope you discover the cause. If it's MS related it might disappear as suddenly as it appeared.

            Shingles?

My first thought is shingles. You don't have to have a rash to have shingles. I've had the MS hug and for me it is more of a squeeze and difficulty getting a good breath. We are all different but I would run this by the doctor as it has gone on for a long time. If it is shingles it is best if treated early rather than later as it can become permanent nerve damage. Enter shingles into the search area of this site.

My family Dr also suspected shingles, but then ruled them out. I called my neuro and he ordered MRI's of C spine, T spine and Brain. Two down and one more to go on Monday. Then my visit to him in mid April. The pain has lessened quite a bit, thank goodness!

              Thanks
