Camp Crip: A Disability revolution: Netflix

This was on the NYT must watch list of movies on Netflix. I have only watched the first few minutes but already I am hooked. It is a camp for crippled teens that started the ADA revolution, apparently. I can’t wait to watch it later. If you have Netflix, give it a world

The first half hour was hard to watch visually due the use of hand held cameras. But then professional cameras are made and the movie is terrific and thought provoking. I think you will enjoy it.

Thanks for the suggestion! I've added "Crip Camp" to my Netflix queue. I get movies on DVDs in the mail from them regularly and look forward to seeing this one in particular.

I watched "Crip Camp" months ago, after a dear friend and Child Neuro Mom guided me to it. It provides powerful insight into the disability rights movement. It is raw, gritty, and honest.

"Crip Camp" was nominated for Best Documentary Feature at the 2021 Academy Awards.

This film was created about the time when I realized that I needed to be an activist for the rights of Jonathan and Michael. I am so very grateful for these pioneers.

I didn’t know that Netflix still mailed DVDs back and forth!! How many do they let you order at a time? Do you pay postage, or just rental fees?

Yes, Netflix still sends out DVDs for those who haven't moved with the times. I pay $12/month and am allowed to have 2 DVDs checked out at a time. They pay the postage.

I own a few DVDs that my son made for me by copying ones he owns but I'm not keen on watching the same movies over again. There are some that I don't mind repeating but not many. "Secrets and Lies," "Through a Glass Darkly," "Les Misérables," "The Browning Version," and "Jesus Christ Superstar"--those are about the sum total of movies I've rewatched, and two of those are primarily for the music.

So I splurged on the Netflix subscription, something I had for a while years ago but it was only 1 DVD at a time for about $8.

Agate, glad you have that. I have Netflix and pay something like $13.00 I think. However, I had to have a way to stream it, so I got a Roku. I also watch Amazon Prime with my Roku. I really don't watch very many movies. There doesn't seem to be many that I really like. The one exception that I really thought was great was Trip to Bountiful, which I watched on Amazon Prime. That was one Linda told me about.

I watch Netflix on my computer. I pay about the same amount as you do, Virginia.

There are movies, documentaries, and a wide variety of offerings on YouTube.

There's also Amazon Prime. Hulu, Disney +, Apple TV, and on and on ... they all offer a month free to lure you in. When I bought my new iMac, I received a one year subscription to Apple TV.

PBS may offer some movies to view on line. And maybe TCM.

Watching the award shows, like the Oscars or the Emmys, it appears that movies, documentaries, and TV shows, which air on line, rather than on TV or in a movie theater, are the most nominated. For example, "Crip Camp" was nominated for an Academy Award this year.

                  Changes ...

I watch streaming movies for free sometimes on Kanopy. It's available through public libraries.

TUBI is a free movie and TV app that popped on my BF's smart TV. We used it to watch old episodes of Doc Martin.

I watched "Crip Camp" twice with friends. I definitely recommend! Judith Heumann from "Crip Camp" also wrote a fantastic book called "Being Heumann: A memoir of a disability rights activist" that is a great follow up to the documentary.

Good to know they still send out DVDs. I watched "Crip Camp" off of a friend's Netflix that was screen shared via video call LOL.
