New Yorker article about MS

This long article in the New Yorker (July 17) contains some interesting information about MS and one of the MS Centers (the Tisch Center in NY). It's entitled "A New Approach to MS Could Transform Treatment of Other Diseases" and is by Rivka Galchen:

Agate, yes this article is long however I found it to be one of the most interesting I have read. Thank you for posting it. It says a lot about this disease we live with. We may have been born a little too soon to realize a lot of the advances that have been made, but I found it fascinating to know that will not always be the case.

It seems as if the MS drugs have been around so long now (since 1993) that the results are beginning to show. I loved this statement in the article:

A study from Turkey comparing the records of an M.S. clinic in 1996 with those at the same clinic twenty years later showed a dramatic decline in the number of wheelchair-dependent patients—a particularly visible measure of disease.

Yes, the drug companies are cashing in in a big way, and the results aren't at all dramatic, but the results are real. The drugs have been around for 30 years now, and that's enough time for people to have lived with MS and found out what it was going to do to them. It's really good news that there's been found to be a decline in the number of wheelchair-dependent patients.
