Researchers identify biomarker of cognitive fatigue in MS & long Covid

However, the underlying causes of this kind of fatigue remain elusive, write Stefanie Linnhoff at Otto-von-Guericke University, Germany, and colleagues in a Only registered and activated users can see links., Click Here To Register... in Psychological Medicine. That's largely down to its "subjective and often invisible nature", along with a lack of objective diagnostic markers, they write. In their paper, though, they describe what they believe to be a marker — one that they think could be used to monitor cognitive fatigue in people with a range of different disorders.'

Cognitive fatigue is scary if it's what I think it is. I may have had a couple of episodes of it, or maybe more than I know.

We don't hear much about COVID any more but it hasn't gone away.

IMO it will never go away. AI

Here’s a clear, tight 50‑word description that still feels human and grounded:
Cognitive fatigue is a mental exhaustion that builds when the brain is overworked or stressed. It reduces focus, slows processing, and makes decision‑making harder. Tasks feel heavier, motivation drops, and even simple thinking becomes effortful. Rest, pacing, and supportive structure help restore clarity and mental energy.

Yes, rest and more rest, and pacing--not sure what is meant by "supportive structure" but it sounds helpful.

I understand that the experts in epidemiology have said that COVID is here to stay. It began as a "novel coronavirus" and those viruses pop up now and then, but just because they're novel doesn't mean they're temporary.

Yes, I agree. It is really challenging nowadays here because so few people are actually taking part--though some seem to be logging in.
