This is Emma's nest which has been taken over by another hummer named Tink who is sitting on a couple of eggs that are about to hatch. Tink is a very colorful, pretty hummingbird.

Emma built her nest in the nearby hanging potted plant that the dove started to nest in last year. She has laid one egg and will probably lay another soon. Here's Emma's new nest.

My brother, who lives in San Clemente, CA, has a hummingbird nest in his rose bush again this year. He can hardly go out into his yard without the protective little mamma buzzing him!

Tink's eggs have hatched since yesterday!

Wow, I just came in from watching a beautiful northern flicker in my backyard. He ( I know it was a he cuz males have red patches on their heads) was clinging to a post that my squirrel proof bird feeder is mounted on. At first he appeared to be just sitting there looking around, but then I could see that he was, every so often, sticking his long tongue up a drain hole in the bottom of the feeder and pulling birdseed out! The larger birds can't get onto that feeder, so he had figured out how to get seeds out from underneath! Gives a whole new meaning to "birdbrain"!
