Strength of vitamin D3 supplements can vary widely, study says

Because vitamin supplements aren't regulated (in the US anyway), those who buy them have to be careful about what we're actually getting. It seems that vitamin D3 is likely to vary widely. This article describes a survey of 12 brands. Buying a brand with "USP" on the label seems to be a good idea.

Agate, thanks for posting this. I wish they would name the brands and what we are actually getting in each one, because we still don't know anymore about that. I, as well as many others on here take vitamin D3. Wish I knew exactly what I am getting

It looks as if the brands aren't named in the JAMA Internal Medicine article either. The manufacturers have been assigned numbers.

I'd like to know the brands too. I'll be on the lookout for more information.

I will be going back on D3 as soon as I get the numbers in the normal range (50-80) at last count (after overdos) I'm at 86

What ever happened to that guy that used to be here that was a real D3 advocate?

According to the article there is even a variation in a single bottle. How on earth is anyone to be sure. I have gone back to taking 5,000 IU daily in the winter here in Michigan. I am due for some bloodwork so I guess I better get on it. I remember who you mean about the vitamin D posts. I'm sure his name will come to me.

Actually ran to archives. Ted Hutchinson. Havent seen him in a while.

              I take 5,000IU daily--doctor's recommendation.

Some companies probably have better track records than others. Apparently the labels with "USP" on them are apt to indicate more reliable consistency in the amount of D3 you're getting with each dose.

I'm trying to get the original JAMA article but I don't think it names the companies.

I Purchase my 5000 IUs from Puritans Pride. I don't see a USP
on the bottle, but there's a seal of approval from someone on
the bottle. They are pretty trustworthy, me thinks?
