Drug with Unhealthy Past OK'd to treat MS

This was in our local paper....under the Health Care column..."A chemical once used to treat sofas-until it was found to cause rashes and blisters in people who sat on them-is now poised to become a major therapy for multiple sclerosis.

The Food and Drug Administration on Wednesday approved the chemical, dimethylfumarate, which will be sold by Biogen,Idec under the name of Tecfidera, the third of a spate of oral drugs that are transforming the treatment of multiple sclerosis.

Despite the drug's seemingly odd history, Wall Street analysts, doctors and patients expect Techidera to become a blockbuster because of its combination of efficacy and relative safety and the convenience of being a pill."

Does anyone else question who is pushing these chemicals that were discarded for their original use because of serious complications but deemed to be a "blockbuster" in MS? Chemicals that were once used to treat SOFA's and not humans? Hmmmm..... Wall Street analysts? BigPharma? Not researchers searching for a cure.....

    Blessings,

Yes I missed the earlier discussion so thanks for bringing it up.

Is GREED totally driving all the decisions in the medical world these days?

Greed seems to have been with us since the beginning of time. Maybe it's not so surprising that greed is driving decisions in the medical world.... All we can do is stay on the lookout for it, I guess.

One huge problem is that people who are sick are feeling helpless and tend to trust anyone who comes along with what looks like help. Patients are a really vulnerable lot.
