I was interviewed for this a week and a half ago and never caught that it was published yesterday since I have been on vacation. It was reprinted on MS Views and News Blog this afternoon and this link will take you there.

You can be my nurse anytime. You touched on what we all hope our doctors and nurses take to heart. Thanks so much for posting it.

          From the interview:

          3. What do you most often wish you could say to patients but don't?
Actually, I do say it! Your healthcare team is human with feelings just like you! We are not invincible! Treat us with respect and we will do everything in our power to help you! Be an active member of your healthcare team!
That is so important to keep in mind, I think. My PCP before I moved was a doctor who was just starting out in her career when I became her patient. As time went on she developed a bad leg. Eventually she was moving around her office by scooting around on a stool on wheels most of the time, but carrying on. I was her patient for about 25 years. She was out for long stretches of time--sometimes on account of the leg, a couple of times to take care of ill family members.

My current primary care doc is a woman I've been seeing for over 4 years now, and she is by no means old, maybe in her 40s. She's been out for long periods of time too, being treated for breast cancer. When she came back in the office she could hardly sign her name but she too was carrying on quite nicely.

Both these doctors have made me realize that they're very human and just as apt to be on the sick list as anyone else--and just as apt to make mistakes as anyone else too, though doctors are of course trained to be very, very careful.
