    Newbie MRI question

    Hi everyone,
I had my brain and full spine MRI today. They said they were going to use contrast, but didn't end up using it. Could this be a good sign that they didn't find any lesions? I know this question has probably been answered many times - sorry!
    Thanks,
    Michelle
(no DX of anything- MS type symptoms for 6 years on and off).
Nothing diagnosed, but some MS type symptoms on and off for 10 years.
    Many MRI's clear.
    So...who knows!?

    Hi Michelle,
Are you asking whether their failure to use contrast means that they didn't find any lesions? No, it does not mean that.

Maybe there was a mixup in the order, and they were supposed to use contrast but didn't? Or maybe the prescribing doctor changed his/her mind and told them not to use contrast for some reason.

You had every right to ask why they didn't use contrast.

If there was a mixup about the instructions the MRI technicians got, you might have to repeat the MRI, I should think.

There are several reasons why contrast might not be used. One has to do with kidneys. If you have certain kidney conditions, the contrast dye could have a bad effect on you. I believe there are other reasons for not using contrast as well.

If you were me it could be because they couldn't find a willing vein.
But that's just my old whine.

        Hi agate,
Yes, I'm asking whether their failure to use contrast meant they didn't find any lesions. I don't have any kidney problems, and didn't indicate any on the form prior to the MRI.
I filled out the contrast form too - I know they took it in with them.
All she was at the end was they needed to do one extra scan and then the Dr would come in and check if she was happy with it.
I only have to wait until Friday for the results which is good. Hate the wait!

Thanks Renee! But not, she didn't even attempt to inject the dye!

            Hmmm...I hate waiting too!

Let us know what happens on Friday. I know it is frustrating to be in the dark about your own situation....

Just to add a note .....I have had mri tests that showed many lesions and now show that those lesions are not active. Whatever it all means, I can still farm my small farm and that is a good thing!

            Best of luck

Our forms before the scan ask "have you had an MRI with contrast today". At least once I've checked off "yes" by accident. The phrasing seems a little weird, but I guess some people get multiple MRIs in one day. If you checked yes, they may have thought you already had it in you

I've had 2 MRI's in 15 years. The first one was in the tiny tube and made me a little uncomfortable. I guess I watched too many Tarzan movies as a kid. The huge Boa Constrictor wrapping around poor Tarzan, but he always got out of it.

The second MRI was with the new, larger type, MUCH better.

Friday is almost here. Hang in there, and I hope the results go well. Not knowing is MUCH worse than knowing. If you know, you can start a treatment. Good luck.

wumberlog, some people actually do get more than one MRI in a day. They need to be careful with that gadolinium dye or whatever it is they use. You can't have it if you have certain kidney conditions, for instance.
