Contrast Agent Builds Up in Brain, FDA Warns
Agency urges physicians to question the need for repeated gadolinium-enhanced MRI scans

    by Kristina Fiore
    Staff Writer, MedPage Today

The FDA is warning that gadolinium-enhancing contrast agents used in MRI imaging may build up in the brain after repeated scans.

Although there are no known health risks at the time, the agency is investigating whether these brain deposits could become problematic.

The investigation follows recent reports that deposits of gadolinium-based contrast agents remain in the brains of some patients who have four or more contrast MRI scans, long after their last dose.

The FDA said physicians should consider limiting the use of these agents to "clinical circumstances in which the additional information provided by the contrast is necessary," also urging them to reassess the necessity of repetitive contrast MRIs in established treatment protocols.

The warning doesn't affect contrast-enhancing agents, such as those that use iodine or other radioisotopes.

The FDA will investigate the risk in conjunction with the National Center for Toxicological Research, and it's not requiring any label changes for gadolinium-enhancing contrast agents at this time.

Thanks a lot for this article. It reminded me that I want to say no to any more MRI scans. After the first one 25 years ago which had about 80 active lesions, subsequent MRI do not show much.

I agree with all the comments above. They don't know that it causes any harm, but I don't think I need another weird thing in my brain - got enough junk going on up there.

They don't know yet that it causes any harm. I think we're being told to stay tuned because they're still looking into it.

Thanks for calling attention to this, SuzE-Q.

I've only had 2 MRIs, and just one of those with contrast. I don't plan to have any more.

Vindicated. My last two MRIs I refused the gad contrast, telling the doc I didn't trust the gad.

BBS1951 you should print this report out to take to your doctor. I wonder what he would think then!

I'm surprised that this thread is this old. I thought we gad talked about this recently.

Anyway, I saw my Neuro a few weeks ago and she wanted a new MRI. She ordered it without Gad. She said that if anything is suspicious then they do another one w Gad. She also said that insurance companies don't like it.

That's a major change in the way things are done, isn't it? Did she say why the insurance companies don't like the gadolinium contrast?

Was it that it's costly, or that it might do more harm to the patient than good?

Thanks for explaining. I'm not surprised that the insurance companies dislike paying for two MRIs but it sounds as if your doctor is willing to go to bat for you if it turns out that the second one, using the dye, is advisable.

When is the non-gad MRI going to happen?
