Check out these lucky local surfers who got to surf with two rare Right Whales today. I hope they're still there when I paddle out this weekend :) I have surfed with sharks, Rays and manatees, but never whales.... Yet!

Surfing alongside a whale must be a great experience! Wonder if the whale ever shows any awareness of the surfer nearby.

I would bet they are aware. When we surfed this summer, two manatees came over to us and hung out by us for at least ten minutes, checking out the boards with gentle nudges, nibbling on the leashes. They were very aware of our presence. So, to extrapolate, same might be true of whales.

Those whales are so huge, I would be wary that they might accidentally crush us. Spinner sharks are so huge and leap straight up out of the water -- dangerous if they're by you as they could land on you and knock you out or break your neck. A local guy was knocked unconscious surfing when a tarpon leaped out and hit him in the head. His buddy pulled him ashore.

Hence my resolve to never surf alone.

Two of my dear friends have ventured into the oceans to communicate with whales and dolphins. They have always reported amazing experiences and that whales and dolphins are very intelligent, gentle creatures.

I'm very glad that you never surf alone. Also, be careful of obstacles (like reefs, rocks, etc.) where your board's leash is concerned. I don't speak as a surfer (only body surfed in my days of youth), but based on the experiences of others, who have had accidents.

Hang Ten! (Do surfers still say that?! )

Wow, BBS so impressive - and you really have MS and are honestly Medicare age? As Sally said I couldn't do that even if I didn't have MS. Very proud of you.

Thanks Virginia. Yes, all true. There is a famous surfer, "Wingnut" Weaver who has MS. He was in Endless Summer 2. And of course Bethany Hamilton has only one arm (see her inspiring movie Soul Surfer). ... I have bad asthma, and that really impacts surfing as much as the MS....am lucky to surf with a dozen women over 50 who have my back if I get spasticity out there :)

Earth Mother: most of Florida surfing is sandy bottom: nothing to catch your leash on. But once, in a bad wipeout, it wrapped around my neck: scary!
