Potential MS Stem Cell Therapy Moves into Phase 2 Trial for 1st Time in US

Tisch MS Research Center advised by FDA to advance testing based on promising Phase 1 clinical results

    Carolina Henriques

The Tisch MS Research Center of New York (Tisch MSRCNY) recently announced that its stem cell-based therapy as a potential treatment for multiple sclerosis (MS) will move into Phase 2 clinical testing after encouraging results in a Phase 1 trial, and on the advice of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The decision marks the first time a potential stem cell treatment for multiple sclerosis has advanced to this stage of clinical testing in the U.S.

The FDA advised Tisch MSRCNY to continue its research after the treatment’s tolerability and safety were determined in the Phase 1 trial, with no adverse effects reported. The Phase 2 clinical trial will be a placebo-controlled, double-blind, randomized study with 40 patients in a crossover design: stem cells taken from the patients’ bone marrow will be processed to become brain-like neural cells, a method developed by Tisch MSRCNY and unique to the institution.

“Our unprecedented Phase I results have propelled us into the next phase of research,” said Dr. Saud A. Sadiq, the study’s lead investigator and Tisch MSRCNY’s chief research scientist, in a center news release. “No treatment has shown reversal of established disability until now. The objective improvement experienced in bladder function, vision and walking speed in both secondary and primary progressive MS is remarkable. We now plan to establish efficacy of stem cells as a reparative therapy in Phase II.”

Tisch MSRCNY is now seeking financial support to start recruiting its first patients, and the trial is expected to be launched in the summer of 2016.

Tisch MSRCNY, a nonprofit research center, works closely with its affiliated clinical practice, the International Multiple Sclerosis Management Practice, to enable potential MS treatments to move at an accelerated pace from discovery to development and testing. The center’s goal is to find the cause of MS and develop optimal treatments.

Not sure but I think this is the study that Richard Cohen is in. He was in phase one and made a post that people in phase one could not go on to phase two. I forget why but there is a clear reason.

Richard Cohen is the husband of Meredith Viera( host of The View for years and then with Matt Lauer's on Today and more recently she had her own show for 2years). His web blog is called Journeyman..I think. I sometimes steal info from there and post it her when appropriate.

Anyway, he recently posted that he thought there night be some improvement. If you go to his site you can watch the procedure as it happened. Not a miracle....yet!

Can someone post his site url if they know it? Thx.

Thanks for this, agate! Weird that it's taken well over a decade to get anywhere near a possible stem cell treatment for us.

I just went to Only registered and activated users can see links., Click Here To Register... and found it had not been updated for the Tisch Center that is starting PhaseII. There are trials in Ontario and Manitoba canada, Israel, Sweden and France all recruiting. All but one are only taking participants between the ages of 18 and 50. Israel goes up to to age 65.

My son, who has done lots of research work (he had 3 published papers as an undergrad) is of the opinion that major illness like MS or diabetes cancer etc. Are only going to be "cured" with a multi disciplinary approach. He doesn't think there will ever be a magic pill per se. In other words it will be maybe stem cell therapy with steroid treatment or DMD with some type of autoimmune modulation. Mostly that we will learn how to prevent things first. But research will never stop as all diseases change and mutate while our bodies reaction to them change as well.

His feeling is we put too much emphasis on the magic pill theory. An example he uses is that quite often you need a broad based as well as a specific antibiotic for a major infection. Often when dealing with a secondary infection. Or multiple drugs and treatments for cancer. Most importantly he stresses absolutely nothing works for everybody. And the sad fact is sometimes nothing works. But under no circumstances do we ever stop trying. As he says I have done more things that don't work than things that do work. Thats how we learn what does work.

Some interesting things to think about.

They say it's active but not recruiting. Richard Cohen's Website has a post by him (January 19) saying that the study is looking for more funding.

I notice that it's described as an open-label study. Do I remember someone here on this board (long ago) saying that open-label studies aren't of much value? I can't recall who it was or why that was said. Does anyone remember what it is about open-label studies?

In an open label study versus a double blinded study both the researcher and participant know whether they are on placebo or the experimental therapy. Double blinded neither the participant nor the researcher know. Often in Phase I all participants are open label and getting the real thing. It is in Phase II that they start with Placebo and in Phase III they are now doing the new therapy about equally with an already approved therapy (as Lemtrada used Rebif in their "control arm" of the trial.)

Marc wrote about this in his Wheelchair Kamikazi blog last month, which includes an interview with Dr. Saud Sadiq, Marc's doctor and the study's principal investigator. Interesting read. Be sure to read the comments too. Here's the link.
