A way to get glasses if you can't afford them, maybe

This may be a way to obtain glasses if they're unaffordable for you. I haven't used this route but it looks as if you need to get a voucher letter of referral from an organization like the Lions Club or Red Cross, and then you take that to one of several commercial optical centers that are mentioned in the link, in order to get glasses.

Only registered and activated users can see links., Click Here To Register...

Since that page has a long list of questions, this is the part that tells about how to get glasses at no cost:

I cannot afford glasses. Does OneSight have a program that can help me?

OneSight offers a voucher program in partnership with select retail optical locations. Eligibility is based on visual and financial need. As OneSight, we do not determine visual or financial need, but instead rely on referrals. To be eligible for our voucher services, please partner with a 501(c)3 non-profit organization like the American Red Cross, Lion’s Club, Prevent Blindness or other social agency in your community. Once verified, they can provide you with a referral letter that can be taken to a local LensCrafters, Pearle Vision, Sears Optical or Target Optical location. Store associates can assist you in obtaining eyewear.
It's not clear whether both the eye exam and the glasses are covered, or just the glasses.

This would be a good time to ask, could I take a pair of glasses that the frames are trashed, and get new frames only? A doc prescribed them, but Walmart made the glasses years ago, so it was a frame they carried.

If the frames need replacing but the lenses are still OK, any optician can find a frame that will fit them, or at least I've had that done a few times. Sometimes you may be told there's no frame available to fit those lenses because of the way they were made (for one particular type of frame that is no longer made). In a case like that I might try a different optician.

If the lenses as well as the frames need replacing, you'd have to get both at once. Some of the big chains offer deals (50% off on frames when you also get lenses--that kind of thing).

This program appears to provide free glasses (probably lenses and frames) but since I haven't tried it, I don't know.

It might vary according to your location.

Peter broke a side piece in the middle of the day. He went to For Eyes and they found frames that would fit the lenses.

I was surprised but it seems like all opticians do this.

Thanks Agate. My main concern is getting my drivers license renewed at the end of this year, so I have plenty of time to work things out! Thanks again for the info!

I LOVE the Net. I just went online, and found out in this state, your license can be renewed online. That makes it SO much easier. I HATE going to the DMV and waiting forever to be called to a window. That makes my day!

In my state it can be renewed one time like that, then you have to go in. Hope when I have to renew mine in over a year that there is no age limit.

Do any states have age limits? Mom was 90 in July and still drives. She renewed her license this summer. She had to have her eye doctor and internist each fill out their part on a special form first.

Sally, this is terrible! Of course everyone there should have the best possible eyesight. Or do the staff think they can get away with serving people a dinner of beans and prunes if the residents can't see what they're eating?

Ann, as far as I know there is no age limit for getting a driver's license. However, the reason I said I was concerned is because I want to renew my next ones on line and I wondered if there is an age limit for that.
