This morning, I was leaving the ocean after the leg and hips announced they were done and got very spastic. I spotted a 60 something woman in a beach wheelchair with a young man who pushed her to their "spot". I saw something on her ankle and recognized it as a foot drop AFO appliance, but thought, maybe it was a bandage
Me
id you break your ankle?
Her: no. I have MS.
Me: me too!
Her: I've had it for 20 years
Slader: Me too!
So, I told her I would like to put her on my board and let her feel the water. Her left leg is paralyzed, right is not good, but her arms are great. She had her excuses lined up,about how cold the ocean would be etc. and how she swims a very warm pool.
Me: You gotta say yes to more things. (Then, taking a chance said,)" God put me in your path today. You can't say no to God! Let's do this! You won't feel cold because you will be so adrenalized.
Her: I'd like to sit on the board
Me: No, that will break the board. You are going to lie down on it.
She wanted to lie on her back, not stomache, so I let that be my one concession.
Well, Her son then rolled her into the ocean and then lifted her out of the chair and we struggled but placed her on the board. She marveled that the water wasn't cold :) The chair started to float away.
Her son had run to the beach to get his phone to take pictures of it all, leaving me alone with the woman (yikes).
A local surfer dude spotted it happening and said, "Do you need help?" And he came and corralled the wheelchair and helped maneuver her so she wouldn't slide off the board.... My friend then saw it happening and came and helped hold the board too as we gently got her back into the chair. She offered her board which is wider, but I think the woman had more excitement than she could contain for the day!
Her:So, you all come every Saturday
Me: And often Sunday's too.
Her: Maybe I'd like to do that again
