Epsom salt is one of those things most people had on hand when I was a kid but it's gone out of fashion, along with mustard plasters and throat-painting.
It's still sold though and a lot of people swear by it. WebMD says its benefits aren't proven but that doesn't mean they aren't real. The second page of this WebMD Website gives more information on how to use Epsom salts:
