Plant-Based, Low Fat Diet Improves Fatigue in Small Clinical Trial

    August 8, 2016

In a small clinical trial involving 61 people with MS, researchers at Oregon Health & Science University tested a plant-based, low-fat, meat-free diet compared with an untreated control group. Fatigue scores improved significantly, but no significant impacts were seen in MRI scans, disability, or mobility. Participants were able to stick to the diet, and were able to lose weight and reduce cholesterol levels. Although larger studies are needed, these results help to fine-tune our understanding of how managing diet may help people with MS.

They must have wanted the more typical MS patients. The subjects were between 18 and 70 years old with RRMS and EDSS score of 6 or below.

The diet seems to be a variant of the Swank diet or maybe it was the Swank diet but they're not calling it that.

Drs. Bourdette and McDougall, two of the study authors, have been promoting this diet for years. McDougall puts out a line of food products, too, incidentally, and has developed quite an industry:

In May of 2002 we began our first McDougall Program at the Flamingo Resort in Santa Rosa, California. Our yearly census quadrupled in no time. The food now tastes as if Mary made it at home. Like many things in life, we have asked ourselves why we waited so long to take over complete control of our program. Our non-profit foundation has raised money and has begun a Only registered and activated users can see links., Click Here To Register...with Oregon Health & Science University on the dietary treatment of Multiple Sclerosis. Dr. McDougall is a disciple of Dr. Swank and his diet.

I'm by no means suggesting that the study is aimed at promoting product sales. I am saying that the diet is not very different from the standard diet recommendations given to people with diabetes (or heart disease), and that you don't need to invest money in McDougall's products (I like some of the soups though) or in signing on to any special diet program to eat sensibly.

What's sad is, all this time and money spent, and we are not one step closer to finding the cause of, or cure for, MS.

On the other hand, at least some of these researchers are interested in improving the lives of those who are stuck with MS.

            Howie,,

Yes. We are. Steps closer. Look at the thread about Tavist. Since my eyesight is getting worse I am thrilled with the discovery.

What seems like baby steps to us are giant strides in medicine. All the research may not have cured me but I am definitely living a fuller life because of it.
