    Testing

I kept getting a message about I have a virus, and to call a number, so I finally did. The options for repair were like $400. So I'm testing to see if I can post.

Mod, is there the chance I will spread a virus?

Supposedly I can't get online, but here I am. And the repairs had to be by a Microsoft dealer. Sounds like a scam FROM Microsoft to me.

    Let's see what happens........

That is probably a scam. Microsoft doesn't send emails like that. I've been getting a lot like that the last few days. Delete them and be sure to change your passwords.

    And DON'T call them again!!

THat was a scam. They don't call you. They want you to turn your computer over to them, pay the $400 (or some outrageous amount) and then you indeed will be blessed with a virus. You're here....don't call that number again!

I'z jus a yung feller, but I'z lernin".

I just did a "system restore" to make the computer like it was last month. Everything seems to be okay. The main thing is I can get back in here.

The Net is like a minefield these days. What a waste for these smart people to thrive on making trouble. But they didn't win this time!

It may be the same scam I've been getting treated to. Every day I get at least one call from someone telling me my computer is at risk.

No, it's not at risk and I tell them so and hang up before they have a chance to go through their sales pitch. Just try asking these people for some identifying credentials to prove that they're really from Microsoft. And just how is it that they have access to information about your computer?

We turn off our phone and screen all calls. Every call is picked up by our message machine. Many times, the message is silence with a hang up. We get so many spam callers, and we are unlisted and on the no-call list. But that means nothing, because anyone can find our number through an internet search.

One of the most annoying calls is a bogus "IRS is suing you" message. These jerks prey on Seniors, so beware! The IRS would never call you to tell you that you're being sued.

Another common spiel is: "You called us about home repairs earlier this year," or "We talked earlier this year about home repairs you need done." I think they are hoping that, as Seniors, we have memory loss.

If you have caller ID, you can look up spam callers' numbers on line, and find others, who have been similarly harassed.

For those who use a PC (instead of a Mac), make sure that you have a good spam filter on your email account(s), and that your anti-virus software is up to date. And if you have a Yahoo email account, you should know that Yahoo's security was breached in 2014, and it's only now being revealed to Yahoo email users. Just Google Yahoo email security breach, and you'll get an eyeful.

It's a dangerous world, and there is no such thing as privacy any longer. Be careful.

My MIL gets calls to fix her computer (she doesn't have one). She also gets calls from people who say they are "working in the area" and want to put siding on her house. Her house is made of bricks. ;-)
