Wheelchair stolen from woman with MS, 36

A woman of 36 with MS had her power wheelchair stolen. I don't know if it's only sick people who would steal a wheelchair. There are people who know what has some value and don't mind picking up whatever isn't nailed down and selling it.

I'm usually in my wheelchair but I have to be out of it, as when I shift to the dentist's chair, I make sure I know exactly where it is going to be parked and I try to make sure that it's where I can see it. My wheelchair isn't worth nearly as much as a power chair but it's still saleable.

I don't worry so much about my chair when I'm in the doctor or dentist office, but I'd never leave it outside, or unattended in a public area. Indeed, if not stolen, taken for a joyride by kids who wouldn't recognize the necessity of the chair. People need to understand that for those of us who need a wheelchair (or cane, crutches, other mobility aides), taking them away would be tatamount to cutting off our leg.

:) I think the gangs in our area check vehicles every night to see if they are unlocked. The only night I recall not locking the van my big Rally scooter was stolen. I was unable to go anywhere until it was replaced.

My son Jim got on eBay and found one near Orlando for $300. He drove up and got it for me. The same Rally model as mine. I now make sure I lock the van any time I get out. Jeanie :)

Jeanie, it is smart to keep it locked anytime you are not using it. It only takes one time for someone to walk by, see it and off they go.
