Tell him you need it for any long distance... Criteria USED to be "no more than two car lengths" without assistance. And explain that you need it for shopping, going to church, whatever long distance. And see if he is agreeable. The worst reply is no...and you're back to looking on Craigslist, or ebay, or a local shopper newspaper...or buying new.

In my experience the medical equipment places are fairly eager to sell you a chair and will be happy to call your doctor to ask for the rx but of course you'll want to discuss it with the doctor first.

I had that "need it in the house" requirment when I got my scooter. Crazy. Of course it's to use outside. I had no problem. The neurologist and the dealer both knew the magic words.

That sounds like when I got the referral for my scooter. The dr knew what to write on the referral. I'm still wondering how much longer I'll need to wait, but I'm not worried.

My custom ultra light wheelchair is ready. They will deliver it this week and be sure it fits me etc.

Excellent news. Love to see it. Also, info on how it was paid for. Did insurance cover some or all of it? Since fatigue is such a big part of MS, you'd think they would pay for lighter chairs. Probably not.

How exciting! But did it really take almost a year for this to happen? I was looking at the earlier posts in this thread and wondering.

When I started to explore wc, I was not so impaired ad wouldn’t have qualified. So I didn’t formally initiate the process until @oct or early Nov. after rapid decline in functioning... lots of hoops to jump through before ordering it. This is picked up by Medicare and Medicare supplement.

With PT assessment they said I would qualify for ultralight. Medicare reviewed it and approved it.

I hope your new chair works out for you! It's been a long slog through the paperwork to get it....but it'll be worth it in the end!

You can take everything off and then it’s very light, about 12 lbs. I think I could even lift it into the car. What’s hard though is the physical popping the heavy wheels on and off. I will figure out a strategy.

The store has been so helpful and professional every step of the way.

And you, my cyber friends, have been a valuable fountain of wisdom and support. Thank you :)

But it will be great inside the house. Especially when the new House is ready to move in.
