    Supplemental Nutrition

    ((((((Hugs to All)))))) ~

I noticed that a few of you have mentioned taking Ensure as a nutritional supplement. I know it’s the “go to” supplement, and it has been for years. I used to feed my boys Ensure pudding decades ago.

A couple of years ago, we discovered Orgain, which is an organic protein powder or shake, plant based nutrition. Jim was losing weight, and we tried Orgain to help him improve his nutritional status. For some reason, Jim stopped taking it. When he was diagnosed with cancer, he started drinking it again, and he’s gained weight and improved his nutritional status significantly.

    Here’s a link to Orgain’s site:

Jim used to use the powder and mixed it with coconut milk. But the ready made shakes are more convenient now. He takes one with him to his chemo treatments.

Orgain is just one of the factors in Jim’s remarkable improvement on his cancer journey. His doctor and dietitian recommended Ensure, but we agreed that Orgain was the better choice.

When reading ingredient labels, the first ingredients listed are the most prevalent. So the primary ingredients in Ensure are water, corn maltodextrin (which is corn syrup), and sugar.

I am exceptionally aware of “artificial nutrition,” because both of my sons have had G Tubes and were relegated to liquid formulas containing corn, sugar and soy. With Jon, we tried a blenderized diet of real food, but his digestive system could not tolerate it. I would give anything, if he didn’t have to depend upon a chemical formula as his nutritional source, with primary ingredients contraindicated for hypothyroid. Corn, sugar, and soy.

I don’t know the cost of Ensure these days, but I’d venture a guess that Orgain is more expensive. Because we are fighting cancer, and Jim consumes Orgain every day, sometimes twice a day, we order the 36 case. Caution: The box is heavy and so are the three cases inside of the box.

Jim loves his Orgain shakes. He says that they are delicious.

We don’t have stock in Orgain, and we aren’t selling it. Although, if Orgain wanted Jim to do a testimonial commercial, he’d probably agree to it.

So, we’re offering it to all of you, as an option to Ensure, or other chemically formulated supplements.

If we did Yelp reviews, this would be it, with 5 stars.

    To your health!

    Love & Light,

    Rose

Thanks, Rose. I rely on nutritional shakes when I'm concerned about my lack of appetite, so a healthy alternative is welcome.

My very best to you and Jim!

Thank you so much for your well wishes to us.

The inventor of Orgain is a cancer survivor and a physician:

We're vegetarians, not vegans, and we eat organic as much as possible. Naturally, we tend toward organic options.

But that can only do so much, which is why supplementation was necessary for Jim. He was diagnosed with malnutrition in addition to cancer. So we had to build him up.

      Jim's oncologist said, "Eat chicken!"

I said, "Why would we do that? We're vegetarians! And that is probably why Jim was healthy before he got cancer."

He didn't need chicken to get his protein. He needed Orgain. And lots of vegetarian options to get protein in his diet, like Quorn and Field Roast, Oikos zero yogurt. But Orgain provided that added boost.

The proof is in the pudding as every doctor, nurse, and assistant involved in his care remarks about how well Jim looks and is.

Of course, I'm not discounting the benefits of chemo in Jim's cancer journey. There are many factors contributing to Jim's progress. I strongly feel that Orgain is one of those factors.

So, I just wanted to offer it up to everyone as an option to better health and nutrition.

      Love & Light,

Rose, how nice to know that there's a good alternative to Ensure, which was too sweet for me when I tried it. That was some years ago, and it may have been improved since then.

I'm a lacto-ovo-vegetarian, and find that tofu is a good protein source. It's so smooth that it needs no chewing. Little squares of it occur in some of the Amy's frozen dinners.

What's nice about tofu is it has no flavor. But it picks up the flavor of whatever you mix it with. I used to make a tofu shake every morning. Tofu, soy milk, and Ovaltine, and put all that in the blender. Once blended, it looks and tastes like a chocolate milkshake, but full of everything that's good for you.

When I was my sickest, they prescribed Ensure for me. The vanilla isn't too bad. it did build me back up, nutritionally. I'd recommend one of these drinks for anyone who tends to either skip meals, or needs extra nutrition. Cold, they go down easily (nice when I had that esophageal ulcer!), taste pretty good, and are good for you. (I'm not a vegetarian, vegan, or any of those things....)

I do not suffer from a lake of appetite. But good info in case I ever do. Even when I feel bad I usually can eat.

In recent years if I get too tired I can't eat. Something like Ensure might be a good way to get some nourishment.

There have been several times when I couldn't eat. I just had no appetite. Peter would come after work and I'd head him off with, " I don't even want to talk about food. " My hands would be up in a protective gesture of "don't even try." I can't even look at food ads on TV.

That lasts for a few days and then he offers tea. Then tea w a ginger snap. Next night he'll do the same and add a small piece of cheddar on the small plate. Eventually plates get bigger and I am back to eating. It takes a while. I am never in danger.
