I really think cats and dogs do smile. Sometimes they get this silly grin on their face and at the appropriate moment, that you would really think they are laughing or smiling. I think they get happy too.
It's odd. A dog wags its tail to show it's happy to see you, and a cat wagging its tail means beware.
