    Food carts?

Is anybody here familiar with food carts? Around here they're very popular. I've never bought food at one but have seen the exteriors of quite a few. A group of them assembled together is called a food cart pod, I've learned. This scene is fairly typical:

Maybe I'm just overly persnickety, or I've failed to move with the times, but these places don't look very appealing to me. They must be a fast way to get a bite to eat but I wonder how good the food is. Does anyone have any experience?

Our Vietnamese neighbors have something similar, and she serves pho (soup). She cooks at home, then loads the RV/bus (it's rather large) and parks at various locations throughout the county. And that's the sum total of all I know about food carts.

I wonder if they have to follow any regulations or be inspected periodically. I would not eat from one of these carts. I'm also quite persnickety (great word!).

I agree, Rose. They have the look of places that are beneath the radar when it comes to food safety inspections but maybe I misjudge them.

They are extremely popular here. They have to be licensed and are inspected just as restaurants are. I have not eaten in one. It would be difficult for me with physical situation, since parking the car and walking to get to one would be involved. Some people know exactly which ones that they say have the best food depending on what kind a person wants. Also, there are very few out where I live. They like to get permits for downtown areas where they big office buildings are.

My first experience with food trucks was while we were in Portland, Agate. Portland is famous for them. A block from our
hotel there was an empty city block (no buildings). It was ringed in food trucks. Many for different kinds of chicken, salads, Mexican, Thai, Asian Fusion, everything!

I had a bowl from the Whole Bowl. Every day for 5 days. Link below should show the cart and the ingredients:

Here in Boston, food carts are also popular. The best ones are at downtown sites, tourists spots. In my corner of the city we have them on Thursdays on Farmers' Mkt Day.

I've never seen those, but my Granny had a produce truck that came by once a week, and it sold fresh grown veggies of all kinds.

They are just beginning to appear around here! they have to undergo health inspections just like other fast food restaurants, have to be licensed, staff have to undergo sanitation training, so I think they are quite safe. I've had opportunity to eat only at one so far, and the food -- a barbecue, was really good. I wouldn't hesitate to eat at others...
