    I got a U-step walker!

    For free!

I’m on an app called Nextdoor and it connects people to other people in the neighborhood and in adjacent neighborhoods. I think this free app is nationwide.

Yesterday there was a post offering a U-Step for free from a woman whose father could no longer use it. I messaged her and we picked it up last night.

I want to use it to safely walk alone in the Aboretum on the paved walk ways. They are in the open with nothing to walk beside or grab if you trip. The U-Step is bottom heavy so if you fall, you can use it to climb up. I’ll talk to my PT about it next week. I plan to use it to increase my walking which has got to be good.

Here’s the video (mine seems to be the original model):

Way to go! What a nifty walker!

I like the way it does curbs. And you can sit down when you get tired.

I belong to a Nextdoor too and have noticed that people sometimes offer things for free or for sale. Congratulations on a real find!

Pricier than most walkers but apparently Medicare covers it:

I have only used it to walk down the driveway of the woman who gave it to me. It was very smooth and a great height, sort of like walking behind a well functioning grocery cart. The handles are higher than the ones on the usual walkers/rollators that look too low for me.

Sunshine, the U-Step 2 weighs 20 lbs according to the website.

Ann, I read that and that was the only thing I didn't like for me personally. I am not sure I could lift 20 lbs in and out of the car. Will this bother you? It would not bother Sunshine.

I don’t drive, Virginia, so it would be Peter or an Uber driver. Right now, it’s just for walking alone in open spaces. We live very close to the Arnold Aboretum and Jamaica Pond. That’s what I want it for.

I do think I can lift it.

I'm betting you could tilt it into the back of a car as long as you didn't want to put it in the trunk. No lifting to speak of if you're tilting it. Towards the end of the video the user is putting the folded walker into the back seat area of a car. She lifts it but it could also be tilted without any lifting.

It's nice that this walker seems to prevent the habit of "leaning into" a walker--a problem I have with my rollator.

That looks awesome! When I was walking I could have used something like that! I never did like using a standard walker--i always felt bent over. And I love the idea of being able to sit for a bit when you get tired, or have to wait in line! Good catch!!

Thanks, Cat. I like the that the design has it bottom heavy so if you fall, you can use it to climb up.

What a wonderful gift! And it's a really cool walker! This would have been so perfect for Jonathan. I hope you gets lots of mileage out of it, doing and seeing all the things that make you happy.

Rose, are you signed up for Nextdoor for your area? It's how stillstANNding found this giveaway, and people DO often give away very nice medical equipment when there's no longer a need for them to have it--and they're eager to give it to someone who needs it. There seems to be a very informal network of people helping people out there among the disabled, who recognize that services and useful items aren't so easy to find out about or get. This is their "invite" link--which they state can be used "in social media posts to invite your friends and neighbors." They say it can be used for "friends across the country." So anyone here who is in the US could probably use it. It's a great way to find out about power outages, neighborhood problems, etc., but it's also a place where that informal network is operating--people giving away or selling items, people starting up a small home-based business.

I just checked out that site..there is apparently none in my neighborhood. I don't know too many neighbors around here (my bad. I've lived here for 20 years; only have the email for 2 neighbors, phone numbers for 1, know "on sight" about 4 more...), so I'm not able to set up my neighborhood. Too bad, as I think there would be people around here who would benefit from this..
