I've had diagonal ones but my hand tended to slip on them, and that meant instability for the rest of me. I believe some grab bar have rougher surfaces so you can get a better grip on them. That might make the diagonal type better.
But probably the best way is to try various types out in any way you can because everyone has individual needs. Hard to do properly though without actually installing them!
I have bars going. In all directions. What I have noticed is that once you live with them and your brain learns where they are….any placement works. During those times when I start to tilt before falling I grab onto the grab bar because I instinctively know where to reach.
maybe it helps to know how you fall. If it is a slow slump of a fall the horizontal bar might help slow or break the fall. I tend to lose a sense of where I am and grabbing the bar stops my fall.
I have not read agate’s links but will do so now….
The ones my brother installed for me are vertical. I took note of the back of them. The back is black and feel like very strong rubber. The fingers just kind of naturally fit in the grooves. The front that shows is white. I never had grab bars before and I couldn't have chosen better myself. He put in 4. One I could have done without. I only needed 3.
