People with MS might be more apt to have heart attacks than the general population

Some Canadian researchers compared thousands of people with MS with thousands of people without MS and found that the people with MS were more apt to have heart attacks--from PubMed, March 8, 2019:

The study appeared in Neurology, the publication of the American Academy of Neurology, and at least two of the researchers (Tremlett and Marrie) are well known in the world of MS research.

    May be a spurious correlation.

It may also be that people with MS, compared to healthy ppl, exercise far less. It may also be that they are more prone to other unhealthful behaviors that result in cardiac risk...it may also be that the meds that they tend to be on have a risk element re cardiac . ...

It could be one of those flawed studies but it did appear in Neurology, which is a fairly respected medical journal. Supposedly all publications are thoroughly peer-reviewed there, according to the AAAS.

I agree that lack of exercise and certain meds could easily be contributing to this finding. I don't know if people with MS are more inclined to unhealthy behaviors (smoking, for instance) than other people but certainly smoking has been shown to make people more vulnerable to heart attacks.

Oh great, something else to worry about...

On the bright side, don't we have a slightly lower incidence of cancer?

I hesitated to post this unfortunate news. SuzE-Q, there have been some studies showing less cancer among people with MS.🌈

Curious about lower cancer rate. Maybe because we are mucking around with DMT immune drugs?

I don’t buy the thought that we are more well because we have a hyper immune system. I don’t see it as hyper. I see it as faulty.

Interesting. I suppose there may be a genetic link between MS and certain other diseases. So why do we die younger?

I think some die younger because coping with infections, pneumonia, bedsores, sometimes the inability to swallow, wears a person down over time.

Agate, I think just the overall coping with the disease wears some of us down. Also, I find the older I get the harder I find it to be to address everything else that is wrong with me. Therefore, some things go unattended and they should have and ordinarily would get more attention.
