About cramps...I hope Sunshine takes a look

On another MS board we were talking about rituxan but this response I got about spasms might make some of you chuckle or wonder.....

“Hey Linda, sorry to hear the MS is acting up, falling that much is not a good thing! Are the chest spasms like a cramp? If they are, here's something you might try, I'd give it a slim chance of working. Mustard! Like from a fast food packet. Put a little on your tongue and swish it around in your mouth. The vinegar in the mustard hits a trigger point on the tongue which immediately causes the cramp to release. A non MSer friend of mine who is prone to crippling cramps while cycling swears by this. Consequently I now try to carry mustard with me when I go for long rides, just in case.”

If it is the vinegar in the mustard, which releases the cramp, then why not just take a 1/4 teaspoon of vinegar?

Apple cider vinegar, with the Mother, is popular for treating various health issues. Porkette (Sue) on the Epilepsy forum says that it helps to control her seizures.

Here is some info about apple cider vinegar with the Mother:

If a bit of mustard or vinegar doesn't help, at least it can't hurt.

I had tried this when I was spasming regularly during surfing, prior to dx of SPS, prior to spasms getting so bad. It did nothing. It likely works for ordinary cramps.

But SPS spasms are nothing like “cramps”...they have to do with the body destroying the ability to make GABA, thus insufficient GABA in the system to release muscles automatically.

I have a brother who gets cramps and he use to take just a little bit of mustard on his finger and the cramps would be gone. I don't know if it is still working for him or not.

          Mustard on his finger--really?

That might be a case of mind over matter, and I'm not knocking the idea. It does work at times. I can't think of any reason why mustard on a finger should cure a muscle cramp but you learn something new every day.

People laugh at my cure for hiccups but I've been using it since I was about 10 years old and it always works. It makes little or no sense. You take a glass of water and spread a handkerchief over it and take a drink of water through the handkerchief that is stretched over the top of the glass. Sometimes you need to take more than one sip of water but I've never known it to fail.

Agate, when I said on his finger I meant when he was out and didn't have a spoon. One time we had been out eating and we were standing outside the restaurant when he got a bad cramp in his leg and his wife ran in a near by grocery store and got some mustard. He spread some on the side of his index finger and ate it and quite quickly he was able to walk again and was free of the leg cramp. So now I think of it as mustard on his finger. I am sure if he is at home he would get a spoon.

Don’t worry! We did not think your brother was walking around with mustard yellow fingers....
I use a medicine every Saturday to control some things at the farmers market....I was in tough shape this week so I got the liquid form of the med thinking it would enter my system faster. I do not know but I think I was correct.

                  Sorry, Virginia--I misunderstood!

I thought you meant that somehow the mustard on his finger was working its way into his bloodstream and I was wondering if that could happen.
