The MS World Website for some reason sends me e-mails of their MS World xpress, which comes out once a month. I've never found anything in it of much interest before but this caught my eye. I tried to find where it came from originally, and apparently it is an authentic photo:

My grandmother (Mom’s mom) was a student nurse during the great flu. She eventually became sick and was at home recovering. At the same time, my grandfather was about to go back to England with his parents.

At Christmas that year, he took my grandma for a walk after dinner and gave her a watch with her scrolled initials as they would be if she married him. She was delighted and they eloped. She was 17.

What a nice story. The watch must have been his way of proposing. I'm glad she recovered from that flu.

Read the book The Great Influenza by John Barrie when there was hint H1N1 could devour the country....a terrific read and now it is timely.

I always remember the phrase, “Sick at noon, dead at 4pm”— the healthiest were hit very hard.

Thank you for posting this photo. It should be used as a public service announcement now:

"One hundred years ago, people knew that the best way to protect themselves from a raging pandemic was to wear masks. Be as smart as our ancestors. Wear a mask. And get one for your cat too."

With all of the fashionable and statement masks today, perhaps someone should make some with this photo on them.

I just don't understand the mentality of people today, who refuse to wear a mask, saying it's their constitutional right not to wear one. No thought about the greater good for all of us.

Thank you for the referral to Barrie's book. I'm not sure I'm up to reading it, because I'm already pretty depressed and super angry about COVID. I don't know, but I would guess that many of us have relatives from that time, who didn't survive. My grandparents never discussed it oddly.
