    A Tough Day Today!

I expect, inside me at least, today will be very difficult, because I say goodbye to my family as they all leave for our family reunion trip to Walt Disney World for 7 days. My health has reached a point this type of travel is no longer possible and may even possibly be severely detrimental overall to my survival. The final decision was up to me and my wife, however, my doctor very strongly stated in his medical opinion with the severity of the potential problems, he would/could not recommend the travel.

When I look at the results of our 16 day Hawaiian cruise, followed by the holiday travel and then our 7 days at the beach; even my Army Airborne/Ranger attitude of suck it up and get the mission objective accomplished, doesn't help. The price is too high and the final results in the big picture too dangerous, regardless of the resort's accommodations and family understanding. Severe chronic pain, spontaneous severe exhaustion, cumulative sleep deprivation all on top of the side effects of the narcotic medications does not bode well for a happy successful travel experience. I know this, realize it, understand it, will adapt to it, don't like it because of the implied finality of my circumstances and ironically, I am at peace with the decision.

Things will never again be as they were in my life. I do not pine away in mourning, self-pity or living in the past, but rather evaluate, adapt, and overcome in creating an entirely new life for myself. That life is very short with the progressive degeneration so my situation is in constant flux. It all boils down to one simple principle in life and that is I have the absolute power to "choose" how to respond to the changing situations. I choose life and living to the highest level I can reach. Like I said, it is a "simple' principle in life but it is not an "easy" principle to execute.

I am blessed to have a couple of good friends willing to invest their time each day to stop by and check on me. Their times will alternate so I will have some one stop by in the morning, afternoon, and possibly the evening. This is a major comfort to my wife to wanted desperately to stay home with me. I emphatically rejected the idea feeling it more important she be with our grandsons for their first flight; major hotel resort; Disney; and Universal Studios World of Wizardry experiences. All of which will be remembered for the rest of their lives and she was there for it. And THAT my friends is my personal reward out of all of these circumstances.

I'm sad that you weren't able to make the trip. And I'm sure that your wife feels somewhat guilty about leaving you behind.
Having said that, I agree that you made the right decision for you, your wife, and everyone else. Hopefully they'll bring back some of those memories in the form of pictures and stories. Then you can enjoy them together by talking about them. Enjoy them without the side effects of travel, stress, moving yourself about.

Craig, I am sorry you cannot make this trip with the rest of your family. I do so admire the fact that you see the importance of your wife being there. She can hopefully be your eyes and ears as well. When the two of you talk on the phone and when she gets back home she can tell you all that she can remember and show a lot with pictures.

If you can try to keep in touch with us here on the board this week. Thankfully, there are friends who are able and willing and want to come make sure that everything is alright with you.

      Take care,
      Virginia

Craig, I'm glad you have some buddies stopping in to visit and give an assist if needed. Friends are important, the ring around the ring of family- sometimes closer. And, you can always come here. I think you will be getting a few phone calls, too.

        Carry on,

Craig, it sounds like you've done a lot of thinking about this. I am sorry your health has deteriorated to the point that
you are not able to join your family for this important trip. I am glad to hear you've got some good buddies who will
help you get by while your wife is away. It sounds like you've made a reserve to stay strong in the face of adversity.

That is really all any of us can do...

Craig, I am sorry you aren't going as you would have liked.

7 days with family at DisneyWorld with extended family would have killed
                me even when healthy.

Have you thought of you and buddies going somewhere out of the ordinary?

Thank you all for you sincere "condolences" and warm words of support. I am disappointed, yet in reflection of the aftermath of the Hawaiian cruise, Christmas Holidays and just recently our 7 day beach vacation, it is a wise decision. We have been to Disney World 15 previous times staying 7 days at the Polynesian Resort and I remember and know the pace and difficulty when I was healthy. I was exhausted yesterday by the time the family left for the airport and all I had done is get up and gone to breakfast. This is a decision I am at total peace with when looking at the big picture.

Suggesting my friends and I do some male bonding by going to the movies and getting good and dangerous ideas? I have to admit, I've done most of that years ago so I'm ready for some new and original ideas.

Hi Virginia and thank you for thinking of me and checking up also. My friends have been checking on me twice a day and yesterday I was feeling very bad, scaring one of the guys because he couldn't wake me up. He did get an, "I'm OK," out of me after shaking me and was concerned enough to come back that night and I hadn't moved. Thus, the reason we have them come by. I had just crashed and my body would let me go any further, sleeping almost 14 hours straight.

I've been feeling very badly all day and have now hire the young lady across the street to be on call to feed the dogs so I can crash and they will still be taken care of. I maybe get about 4 to 6 functional hours out of 24 with no continuity or routine never know when I will just shut down. I haven't eaten since yesterday morning around 6AM but will try and eat this evening.

I hear from my wife once a day around 8PM and all is going very well with them, everyone is having a very good time and I wish I could be there experiencing this with my two grandsons because they are having the time of their lives. I bought them a 6 DVD set about WDW and the new rides, behind the scenes and stuff so they are loving it. When I make my morning post on Facebook I say, "HOME" - 5 Days and Counting: etc. etc. etc.

Other than that, I am coping and both my wife and I affirm this was the best decision for so many reasons. That's the way life goes, hard situations, hard decisions, deal with the consequences as best you can.

                          Thank you again.

Coming to this late. So sad things have come to this but I am grateful you have a good support system in place while Joyce is traveling. If I could spare and share energy with you, you can bet I'd do it in a heart beat. You mean a great deal to me and I continue to hold you in thought and prayer.
