Terribly Sad Here in Staten Island, New York...

My Island has 14 deaths so far from the hurricane. Thankfully my family and I are fine, just lost power for 25 hours. Harrier was out for 2 days! But the coast was devastated! My emg was cancelled and also my pain doctor, both of which are not able to reschedule me yet. Thank goodness I have back up supplies of pain meds... My pain doc is on the coat near the Verrazano Bridge. I don't know if they are even still there. My cousin has, or had, a beach house in Ortley Beach, NJ, right next to Seaside Heights. The entire coastal region was devastated, houses were demolished, pushed from foundations or have other heavy damage. And that's what I could see from googling the area. There are no roads into the area that are cleared. It is hard for my brain to comprehend the damage and loss. Yes, they can rebuild, but it will never be the same. That was my vacation spot for over 40 years! And it changed little over time. So this is a kick in the gut... All the boardwalk rides fell into the ocean, and some washed up miles away! It seems frivolous to worry about this, in light of the 37 deaths, so far, but it's all part of the whole sad picture. And you go from people like me, who just lost power to utter devastation, people who lost everything, just separated by a mere 10 miles!

No one has to reply, I just wanted to spread the word, although with the non-stop news reporting, I bet most of you know more than I do!

Glad to hear you are okay following this storm. It is disappointing they aren't getting more help in quicker as reports are that people are desperate for food and water not to mention gas and electricity. The southern coast and gulf coast deal with this every few years and I wonder when we will quit building so close to the shore. I know people like it along the shore, just as I do, but how many of these storms before we decide to change where we build. I pray that the death toll doesn't rise much more as people are desperate and needing basic necessities of life.

Marmar, I saw what was happening on Staten Island yesterday, it was the first time it was mentioned and I think that is so bad, I saw the pleading for help and finally the red cross came , I pray for more help for you all soon! My family and grandchildren are in new Jersey and without power or water and food is running low, I really feel for all of you , I am in Florida so far away to try to go and help them. . God bless you all, you do have people who care and are trying to get to you and many like myself who post on Facebook to make sure the word gets out there. With the election taking tne spot light , I do not want you all to be put on the sidelines. Hugs , GING

Thankful to hear that you have come through this terriffing storm with out any major problems.

My heart and prayers go out to the millions that have been effected by sandy.

I lived In Ocean City, Md. for years acutually met my husband there we still have many friends and family there, as far as we have heard all have made through ok although there is so much damage though it breaks my heart for everyone.

The news coming out seems to be worse and worse. I hope they get needed supplies soon as we should have had supplies stockpiled to get in right away. It is desperate when you need food, water, and shelter but none is available. I remember going through a big typhoon when I was stationed in Guam and we didn't have electricity for 2 weeks. It was tough because the people out east don't have anyway to keep food from spoiling until they get basic utilities back again. I read that even rescue people were short of gas and having a hard time getting through to the people needing help. Long Island seems to be particularly hit hard and getting the worst of deal so far. This would be a time to send in National Guard, Coast Guard, and military helicopters to drop in supplies and helpers to get the isolated areas taken care of. I hope and pray that people are getting all the help they need.

Funny, each time I watch the news, another area seems the worst hit... But from what little I could watch, to me it seems NJ was and is the worst. But my island had 22 deaths and counting, half of all deaths from the storm! Inconceivable! Thanks to everyone for your good wishes...
