I decided to go out early with the trash but even at 10 AM it was like an oven heated up to its hottest setting. (That would be the "Broil" setting on some ovens, I think.)
The air wasn't exactly what you think of as fresh air either.
I met one of the dog people who said she took her dog out at 6 AM but even then the doggy paws got burned from the hot ground.
Thank goodness you deliberately chose an apartment on the shady side of your building, Agate. I’ve been thinking about you all day.
I read an analysis of the Chicago heat wave that killed so many. The difference between who lived and who died was how connected to others they were. People without family or extended family/friends were more likely to die.
I'm doing fine so long as the power stays on. The Puget Sound area in WA, where I lived for so many years, had a similar climate but it tends to be hotter here in OR. In WA I never had air conditioning--and there were some days when it was in the high 90s, when I was useless because of the heat. Ever since MS came along I've tried with all my might and main to live in places facing north that aren't apt to get as much heat in summer.
Yesterday's official high was 112'. Today's forecast is now for 116'. I understand the east coast is getting severe heat as well?
