    Vitamin D Toxicity

A few years ago my late neuro (no he didn't die) put me on 50,000 once a week Vitamin D well after. well he dumped me and the rx of course went away but I found the same dose on line and continued taking them and this week was dx'd withVitamin D Toxicity it's pretty bad I weigh 57 lbs and was all I could do during the visit for the doctor not to throw me in the hospital and INSERT A FEEDING TIBE (like Terri Schiavo had) needless to say I put up quite a fight I agreeed to a IV but the Dr. said that would be to temporary. So I have a month to gain 5 lbs or else.

Ir's totally my faulr I should have not kept taking it at least not at that dose BUT hindsight is.....

So just a bit of warning to any that are taking it.

I really should have known better since I have lived on herbs and vitamins for years and knew how to respect them.

Oh my, it would take 3 of you to make me. How tall are you? That 50000 was probably supposed to be a temporary thing.

All this hooplah aboUt Vit D has left me somewhat skeptical. I know I'm deficient, because I get no sun at all. Bot I cut my D3 to 5000iu every other day and that seems to be working for me.

    You need some protien and some good fat girl. Now get busy and don't make us come after you..{{{HUGS}}}

My goodness Abbey did you really say that right? If so, you need to gain some weight long before a month. Surprised your Doctor did not insist you go to the hospital.

Had you not noticed a large weight loss?

Take care and eat a lot.

        Vitamin D

Sorry to hear that you only weigh 57# and hope you can gain quickly for your health. Here is the scoop on vitamin D....The prescription formula of 50,000 units is vitamin D2 (synthetic) and not D3 which is a more natural form of D (if you are unable to get your D from sunshine). I was also low on D and my endocrinologist prescribed the same dose of 50,000. He rechecked me later and I was barely into the normal range BUT when I found out (by asking the pharmacist which D was the prescription) I stopped taking it.

I tried to get enough D by sitting in the sun but when the weather got sooo hot I could not tolerate. Now I am back to taking D3 as my level is low again. I have just started with 1,000 mg and may take more as I titrate up. I ordered the NOW brand from Amazon. I am also back to sitting outside for about 15-20 minutes in the middle of the day with the least amount of clothing I can get away with. I have read that a lot of PWMS are low in Vitamin D.

Will you have to take anything else for the toxicity such as steroids?

I probably will have to go to hospital to detox, this can really mess up your heart. lungs and kidneys turns them into crystal or something.

You cannot imagine what 57 lbs looks like (I am 5 feet and small boned) all muscle is gone I look like a skelton with skin.

I'm doing all I can do

57 lbs.!!! Yes, it's definitely possible to take too much vitamin D. That mega-dose was supposed to be only temporary, I'm sure.

You might also ask the doctor for a referral to a dietician/nutritionist, who can help you plan out meals, which will be healthy, and have the proper calories and protein to help you to recover.

Your goal is to gain weight safely, so you want to eat food, which will accomplish that goal.

Hi Rose - thank you for stopping by with info.

I can't drink alot of water due to the Emphasema.

I am not just going to start shoveling calories in as its going to take more than calories to fix this mess, NUTRITION is the key and Ensure is not nutrition I found a drink that I know will help

                      Orgain Nutritional Shake

Almonds butter/Almonds/ and raw honey/ henp seed oil and anything organic I no longer buy anything thats not organic from the grocery store - yes I know its more expensive but PAY THE FARMER NOW OR THE DOCTOR LATER

I have a Nutritionist ( as soon as I get the one time fee of $90.00) she has a tv show which I am learing a whiile lot about mutrition at least her and I speak the same language (pork and any shellfish are not good to eat)

So this will be slow go and I am not going to obsess on it I am alowly being able to eat again the sppetite may be coming back

This week will be the first week that I will nor be taking a D pill and wonder if there will be any kind of withdrawal

                      Abby

Here is info on the drink I found

Whether your doctor has recommended a nutrional shake due to specific health concerns or you’re just looking for a convenient, healthy way to get greater nutrition into your diet, these drinks are unmatched. This convenient meal-on-the-go is loaded with tremendous nutritional value, so you no longer have to settle for typical sugar-laden, chalky options. They’re one of a kind and well worth a try. This nutritional shake caught my attention—particularly because it was developed by a doctor who’s also a cancer survivor.

Orgain’s balance of protein, omega-3s, and twenty-three vitamins and minerals makes it a nutritional slam dunk. Especially since the protein comes from whey, a source I have long recommended due to its abundance of amino acids and specialized proteins that enhance immune function. And the fact that each Orgain drink provides 50 mg of omega-3s means added protection for your heart, brain, eyes, joints, and more. In addition to the whey protein and omega-3s, each Orgain drink gives you the antioxidant equivalent of ten servings of fruits and vegetables—an extremely impressive ORAC value of 16,000 (ORAC is a measure of antioxidant activity).
Just think of the cost of stocking fresh produce at home! Each 11 ounce serving also includes two grams of fiber, which helps to slows digestion and absorption so that glucose (sugar) in food enters the bloodstream more slowly, which keeps blood sugar on a more even level. Each Orgain drink delivers an amazing, robust nutritional punch. Even compared to juicing, Orgain is a much better option—cheaper, far more convenient, and no mess. Every serving of Orgain delivers:

•Outstanding antioxidant protection—equivalent to 10 servings of fruits and vegetables!
•Omega-3 EFAs from a vegetarian source for your heart, brain, eyes, joints, and more!
•23 critical vitamins and minerals your body needs to function optimally every day
                      •16 g of immune-supporting whey protein

Both the chocolate and vanilla drinks are naturally-flavored, silky-smooth, and leave no aftertaste! All this is packed in convenient, recyclable servings, ready-to-drink and delivered right to your door with guaranteed freshness for over a year! Plus, it’s organic, caffeine-free, gluten-free, delicious, and easy on your digestive system. Orgain comes in two flavors, vanilla and chocolate—both flavored naturally, with no preservatives. And no chalkiness or aftertaste, either. No other nutritional shake provides this level of nutrition without added sugars and preservatives.

I'm a vegetarian, and I also try to eat only organic food and won't touch GMO foods.

The Orgain shake looks terrific. It's about time someone invented this! Wish I could give it to my son, but he's lactose intolerant, and it contains whey.

Glad you have a nutritionist, who can guide you toward the best sources of nutrition to help you recover.

                          Wishing you success!

Rose I'm hoping it (shake) will help all I know is Ensure is not it as far as a nutrisition boost drink, and loading up on empty calories is not going to help either.

Today is the first Monday I haven't taken a D-4 in 3 years hoping things don't get worse as it gets out of my system. The lab results last Monday showed my D- level at 96 and it was 20 when I started.

Have you ordered the Orgain or is it available in grocery stores? Perhaps a health food store might carry it. I'll be interested to hear your opinion on the taste, as well as how effective it is in improving your nutritional status.

I'm going to mention it to Jon's nutritionist, as well as to the Gtube groups to which I belong.
