Yup, the mice are cured again - this time with cinnamon!

Hmmm...maybe I can add a lot of cinnamon to my chocolate wontons?! It looks like cinnamon powder did a pretty impressive job stopping EAE and improving symptoms. I wonder what the human equivalent of the mouse dosage would be (50mg/kg)...?

I wonder how much we would need to eat? Would we have to add cinnamon to everything and how much? Could it be taken in capsule form so you wouldn't have to taste it? Interesting, though.

Yes, especially good that it appears to prevent blood-brain barrier permeability.

Yes, capsules would be ideal, that seems like a lot to me, although I'll have to look up exactly what the conversion works out to.

I just ordered Ceylon cinnamon from Penzeys Spices. Will try it for several months and report back if it seems to get me out of this flare :)

One must be careful with cassia cinnamon which is the stuff commonly in grocery stores. It will cause liver damage if one takes 1/2 tsp daily. I Read this AfTER I ordered the Ceylon cinnamon which is a different tree altogether. I see my neuro Friday, so I think I will talk to him about it. I don't want to damage my liver!

But, if that is the case, maybe I will just try 1/4 tsp. Decisions, decisions....

Vicky, google cassia cinnamon and read the wArnings about it, especially at Peoples Pharmacy. It will damage your liver. Most cinnamon sold in stores is cassia, not Ceylon, cinnamon.

And, I read that in some countries, cassia cinnamon is outlawed due to liver damage.

Our own FDA turned a blind eye to the problem. Just like they did to the recalled Avonex problem in 2004. ...

I noticed the warnings too, BBS, when I started to look into it. I see it's promoted a lot for lowering blood/sugar. I had a look at a brand in the grocery store, but it too was the cassia variety. The recommended dosage on the bottle seems to be fairly consistent with the amounts in the MS study. So, even if there's warnings online about liver toxicity, the "recommended" dosage of the cassia variety seems to be roughly the same amount suggested in the MS study. Maybe throwing in a liver enzyme panel wouldn't be a bad thing just to make sure the liver is not affected. The good news too is that it's pretty cheap!

From the accounts I read, ceylon cinnamon looks to be superior...not sure why cassia is used more often, maybe it has different properties, is easier to come by, or cheaper?

In any event, I'm going to see if I can source it locally first so I can speak to someone about it.

Anyone that tries it, please report back! We'll have our own MS mouse group!

The cassia is a different tree from the Ceylon. Cinnamon is tree bark. I will let you know what my doc says on Friday.

                              UPDATE

I saw my neuro today who read the abstract of the study. When he searched for it online, up popped this research:

Only registered and activated users can see links., Click Here To Register...

This research found that Cinnamon Ceylon was the most cytotoxic of 36 products tested that are part of electronic cigarette refills. Therefore, my doc recommended not daily dosing until the MS researchers got further along in their clinical trials studies.

He did add he saw no problem Sprinkling it on breakfast, but of course that would not be the equivalent of the mouse
