How on earth does a tiny little bird like that keep all those eggs hidden? I guess that's where feathers come in handy!

Vicky- just to be clear, the barn owl has 8 eggs and the pygmie owl has 4. Pygmie owl flattens herself out on top of her eggs and does use wings on the sides.

Daddy barn owl is one horny guy! A little restraint is in order, eight is more than enough! He needs to save his energy for collecting food for the hungry brood they've created!

I've been watching the "pigmy" owls for awhile now. They are so cute and their nest box is so much cleaner than the barn owl's.
The "pigmy" owls sometimes meet outside and affectionately rub the tops of their heads together. So sweet! One day I watched as Mr. brought Mrs. a big, squirming bug for an afternoon snack. Looked like a giant cockroach but the color was different. Yum!

By the way, they are not pigmy owls. Translator says they're screech owls. Screech owls are small owls too. They screech as they fly in the night. We had a large picture window in the living room of the house we used to live in. On hot summer nights I was startled many a time when a screech owl would fly by and screech loudly just as it past the open window!

She was screeching her head off today when dad showed up. She left eggs and escorted him out on the limb.

She was also making a clicking noise. She brought a dead mouse and set it next to the eggs and started to eat it and do the clicking at the same time. I thought she was talking to the eggs.

Edited to add: Sreech Owl sounds:

The higher-pitched trills are really weird!

WE HAVE A HATCH, MAYBE MORE THAN ONE TONIGHT!! Momma pulled out egg shells, is chattering like crazy and I can hear little peeping sounds coming out from under her. Even got a quick peek of a little one before she tucked it back under! Mamma is so excited her little body is just quaking with excitement as she snuggles those eggs and chick! All the while a rooster crows outside, announcing the good news of the morning!

These are the most excited expectant parents I've witnessed so far. Be sure to watch the film from mei 20 (to the right of the screen) that says "man zonder prooi x2" , which translates to "man without prey x 2!" They both look at the 4 eggs, while she chatters madly. I think she was reading him the riot act for coming empty-handed twice!

Screen Shot 2016-05-20 at 11.07.27 PM.jpgMom got off for a minute so I snapped this screen shot. Second chick is peeking out of the bottom of the egg in front of the chick, saw it move! Mom got back on and rotated the eggs and is snuggling down on them.

I'm wondering if they all hatched?!?

So exciting to watch and hear!

ETA: no, not quite all hatched yet, but may be in process! A lot of activity and noise going on! Two definitely out of their shells, I saw mom tear the shells apart and saw new owlets.

Well, I've seen two chicks so far and hear lots of cheeping! They are very active and mom is having a time trying to keep her little white wigglers under her. She keeps her head tucked down to hold them in, but every so often one or two escape. Then she starts chattering and screeching a lot!

The mother Kerkuil stood up just long enough for me to see she has a *LOT* of eggs!
