So Hi to everyone for the month of August! Thanks Peg for reminding us that time is marching on.
I thought all of you got your checks on the 1st or the 1st business day if it came on a week-end. Since I do not get mine until the 3rd week of the month it really doesn't matter to me.
This month has started out sad. I think I wrote a post last month about a friend and neighbor who had to go to Hospice House for a 5 day respite, came home and had to go back within a couple of hours because of getting dizzy and falling. She came home Thursday with 24 hour help that she was paying for. I talked with her Thursday afternoon. I was going to get her some food from the hot bar at Whole Foods. We had talked just briefly when she said "Virginia hold on a minute there is something I want to do". She laid the receiver down and I could hear her talking to the lady who was there to care for her. She told the lady that she wanted to get up in a little bit and see if she could walk and get around without falling. The lady was saying "no,no, you stay where you are". My friend is very determined and forceful and I could not hear everything, but could tell there was a little difference of opinion. Then the phone was just hung up. I didn't think anything about it because the lady was there with her.
Later that day or evening she was again taken back to Hospice House where she died Sunday. She had been doing very well before she went there and had told me she could take her own baths in the tub and she could take out her trash and she said she had the maid that came one day every week and sometime she got her to come more often. She called me while she was in the Hospice House a couple of times. When I asked if she liked it, she told me very emphatically "NO". She said I will tell you everything when I get home. She told me she was scared out there, and this was a lady who was not afraid of much of anything.
I miss this lady and listening for her calls. She and I had talked more in the past couple of years - more than I had talked to anyone. She told me in one conversation a couple of weeks ago that if she went first that I would have an Angel.
I also have regrets because I did not spot that she was this bad off or this close to death. Her mind was clear and her voice was strong. She was very smart and we liked the same books and talked about many things during the past 2 to 3 years. I am sad.
The funeral will be in her home town Saturday. It is about 1 1/2 hours from here and due to that and the heat I will not be going. Three of my neighbors are going. Also, the maid that she used all the time, which is the one I use for two hours every other week.
My brother told me that since Hospice has gone to Transitional Living Center here in this State and has now started making money that things have changed with them. He said he had been reading a lot about them. I do know that her life was not her own once she signed up with them.
If you don't have a big family life at this stage, just gets more and more lonely.
