OT: Cindy has passed over the Rainbow Bridge

Cindy, our matriarch cat, 16-1/2 years old, passed over the Rainbow Bridge this morning. The dear girl had diabetes for the last 2 or more years. She had been doing OK on a special diet for these last years...but over the last week lost nearly two pounds of weight, was hanging over her water dish, and when we woke up this morning, she was too weak to even get up on all four legs.

Cindy had a rough start in life. She was born in 2000, and at 1-1/2 years old, some savages otherwise known as teenagers threw her into a bonfire. One of them then reconsidered, pulled her from the flames, and dropped her at the door of a vet. She was pregnant. While recovering from her wounds she gave birth to 5 kittens, only one of which survived. We found her and her daughter in the animal shelter in 2003. Several other folks had said they would adopt her, but then when they saw her scarred body, they backed out. Tom Cat took one look at her and insisted we take her...and her daughter...home. She lived with us for 13 years, and ruled the household. Her daughter was kept in line, the other two tom cats, when they came in, learned quickly who was the boss, and deferred to her always. I'm not sure who will take over now. I'm not sure they quite know that she is gone, either. Can't really blame them....it's not quite set in with us, either.

Catdancer isn't dancing right now. And uppitycats isn't feeling all that uppity, either...CindyIrfan.jpg

How very sad! I'm sure Cindy appreciated the good home, particularly after such a horrifying experience.

Watching a beloved pet fail is a very heart-wrenching experience but at least you were there for her till the end, and she had what all too many cats don't have--a caring home to call her own.

Condolences to you and Tomcat and the other cats--all of you must be feeling the loss.

:) Oh Cat and Tom Cat I am so sorry for your loss. Losing pets is harder than losing family. They only give unconditional love. I am glad you have other pets to help you through this. Jeanie :)

Very sorry to hear this, Cat, but you know you did right by her - in the beginning and today.

I can't imagine a better home for a cat. You posted a picture once of a room that was filled w paper and toys and other joys to entertain cats.

Cindy won the lottery w you and Tom.

Cindy sounds like such a remarkable cat that maybe there is some way of honoring her with an appropriate memorial, perhaps a Webpage or something on Facebook?

There have been cats who have been memorialized--the English lexicographer Dr. Samuel Johnson's cat Hodge, for instance, has a statue of himself standing on top of Dr. Johnson's famous dictionary with a couple of oyster shells, and the inscription a quote from Dr. Johnson, calling Hodge "a very fine cat indeed."

Though Johnson died in 1784, the statue dates from 1997.

I'm so sorry Cindy passed away! Diabetes is hard for both the humans and animals that have it. You obviously gave an absolutely amazing cat the life and home she deserved! I don't know how anyone could resist that face! Bless you. May she rest in peace!
