Which is easier--cursive writing or block letters?

Does anyone write anything without a keyboard any more? Which way do you prefer to write by hand--in cursive writing or printing (using either all capitals or a combination of capitals and lower-case letters)?

Cursive writing is almost obsolete, as this article (New Yorker, October 26) points out:

I'm a little sorry to see it go but maybe it's just because it's what I spent quite a while learning as a kid and have used all my life.

But since MS came along, if I'm writing anything that has to be read, I print using block letters. They're much easier to read than my handwriting. Also, it's what the US post office is insisting on.

But if I'm in a hurry and just scribbling down something, I turn to old-fashioned cursive writing. It's much faster and easier for me. I don't have to lift my hand up off the page nearly as often.

My cursive handwriting is no longer very readable though, and if I return later to something I wrote the day before, I have problems deciphering it.

A friend of mine often writes fairly long letters in cursive. I have problems reading her writing too but can't bring myself to tell her that sometimes I can't figure out what she meant.

So maybe cursive writing always does run the risk of being illegible. It's almost always less legible than printed letters.

Maybe I should be glad to see it go.

I haven't actually written anything in years, beyond my signature. My handwriting is so bad I can barely read it when I go back to it. I think a grocery list is about as long as anything I've written. I do write in cursive when I write...

Addressing the occasional envelope or label, I have to use print because the post office seems to be requiring it. They also want no punctuation.

I'm not so sure I like having no punctuation. Often it's unnecessary in addresses, probably, but there are times when it prevents confusion--is the term for this "disambiguation"?

As in this address: 1525 S.E. Trump St.

Written the post office's preferred way, this comes out: 1525 SE TRUMP ST

I live at an address where this kind of problem comes up. My address is confused with (not my real address):

      15255 E TRUMP ST

because the "5" and the "S" are so easily confused.

I have always written in cursive and as you Agate my handwriting is all but illegible, and sometimes is completely illegible. However, I can't print well. I just never did print and didn't learn. I guess I must have in 1st and 2nd grade, but it has been too long to remember.

:) My cursive is at times unreadable at others it is fair. All my friends know I have poor writing. If I see that a word is unreadable I cross through it and rewrite it. I send all my bills by mail and a lot of cards and letters. Jeanie :)

Some years ago when I realized my handwriting wasn't looking very legible I got some books on handwriting and started practicing.

I gradually developed a handwriting that is part printing and part cursive and I try to get by with that.

I was tempted to try calligraphy but that looked like work, and the materials aren't exactly cheap.

To get some books on handwriting sounds like a good idea, and then practice, practice. Maybe I will do that. Mine has gotten so bad I don't know if it would do any good.

I'm not sure it helped me much but I learned a few different and easier ways of forming letters.

Cursive as it's faster albeit poorly readable.

Have noticed they don't really teach pencil grip in kids anymore. Their grips are atrocious, and yet they have to write more now in elementary school. They're getting hand cramps because they have such poor grip it necessitates it gripping the pencil tighter.

I write everything like my shopping list in block letters. Even checks, except my signature which is written in cursive. Plus I am now left handed. It wasn't as hard to switch as I thought it would be, but write very little now.

I am/was an occasional artist, but have never tried to draw again.

I mostly did Surreal art. Most everything hanging on my walls is my art, except for some photos my brother took on his way from California to Virginia, I've framed and put up.

Ok, Howie, you've now opened up the interest in why you switched to left handed writing?

Can we see some of your artwork - take a pic and post?

I alternate between cursive and printing in my writing, a combination has arisen through the years.

I had to switch to my left hand because my right arm is numb, shoulder to fingertips. I have no fine motor control with the right hand. The event that made me switch was I started dropping the pen mid sentence, because I couldn't feel how hard I was holding the pen.

I have some artwork saved on this computer, but don't know how to get it from the computer to posting it here. I'll work on it!

The little picture frame, near the emoji list, of options, it has an option to post a pic from your computer.

Learning to even print with your nondominant hand is a hard feat to have mastered!
